When did "cocksucker" become synonymous with "homosexual"?

Dammit, people, stop posting between me and Stinkpalm.

Apparently not routinely since half the people on this thread don’t remember hearing the word used that way. Many people agree that it could be percieved that way, but even most of those have never heard it used to describe gay men exclusively.

Its not used exclusively against men. In your head it is, but in the real world it is not. “That little cocksucker shit on the rug again (dog)” “Can’t get the cocksucker started (car)” “Where did that cocksucker go? (Remote control)” “The boss is being a real cocksucker about this (boss)”

I could go on for days but I know I will not convince you differently. In your mind you are right. No reasonable arguement is gonna sway you.

Your arguement about “blows” is really REALLY weak. It boils down to “Oh, everyone always says blows so that one is ok, but cocksucker…”

If nothing else your reliance on the word “cocksucker” (or any other obscenity) belies an anemic lexicon and perhaps a juvenile mind. You should read a few books and expand your repertoire.

None of your hypotheticals usages refer to a woman. I think that pretty well establishes my case. Maybe if I have time when the boards are quiet, I’ll run a few searches for the word to see if it has ever been applied to a female as an insult. I’d be very surprised indeed if it has.

What the holy fuck ever happened to backing up your statements?

The least anecdotal support for either side is a goddamned google search, hardly a basis for a rock-solid argument.

You are - collectively - presenting nuggets of bullshit as if they are God-given mandates on the word’s true meaning and the meaning in the hearts of the people who use it.

IMNSHO, the possible meaning of a word can be debated quite easily, but if you’re going to try to legitimize one def over another, then you’d better have a solid argument. And as always, anecdotes are not statistics.

Of course, “belies” may be giving you too much credit. “Betrays” might have been more accurate.

Why don’t we combine all perjoratives into the phrase “odious wretch?” Instead of insulting someone by calling him/her a “cocksucker” we can simply say “You, sir (or madam), are an odious wretch.”

In my day, I have been called, among other things, a cocksucker, a motherfucker, a bastard and a sonofabitch, sometimes in the same sentence. In some contexts, I was clearly being insulted. In other contexts, I was being teased and in yet other contexts, the words were used in a friendly way. I have never had any trouble identifying the context and my response to those words always depended on the manner in which they were used.

I am not, in the legal sense, a bastard, my mother was not a female dog and I have never orally copulated another man. I have, however, engaged in sexual intercourse with several mothers, although not with my own. Some of those mothers did, though, orally copulate me. I suppose they could be called “cocksuckers” although it never occurred to me to describe them as such. If I have a point, it is this: Some of us are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Piss off MLC. I am not doing a google search on that term from this machine. Moreover, if you bother to read the goddamn thread, you’ll find that one poster has already reported the results of such a search, which confirmed precisely what I’ve been saying. Check it out, back near the end of page 2.

I think the only fixation on homosexuality here is with minty. Get a fucking grip, dude. You can bitch until you are blue in the face, but if we don’t feel homophobic (or are, ahem, bisexual) then we aren’t using cocksucker to refer to homosexuality.

I mean, what fucking language do you speak? “Bitch” is used almost entirely against women, but we are not calling them canines. For fuck’s sake, you use the language every day, don’t you? How often do you use words whose construction doesn’t relay the actual intent?

Fucking, usually used as an intensifier as in “very”. “That is fucking great!” does not mean “That is as great as fucking!”

This cracked me up.

I don’t.

minty cocksucking green, the motherfucking thread that started this brouhaha referred to a woman as a cocksucker, you ignorant piece of shit. READ THE MOTHERFUCKING THREAD BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO CLAIM OFFENSE ON THE BEHALF OF OTHERS.
And trashing another poster’s taste in movies, movies you have made it abundantly clear you haven’t seen, is just stupid.
GLAAD complained about Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but they don’t speak for all homosexuals- I went to see that movie with my boyfriend and we both thought it was hilarious. One of the central jokes, which anyone who bothered to see the film would have gotten, is that homophobes are ignorant and most likely sublimating their own sexuality.

Looks like I didn’t read the damned thread?? Piss of yerself.
Really knocks you up the ladder in my book as a “non-kneejerk poster”.

I will, however, concede that had I inserted the words “given thusfar” between “support” and “for” my point might have been more obvious.

Google may be good for a quick litmus test, but it’s not proof.
I could argue that a google search for BOTH those terms skews the results, because you’re already “loading” the results towards sites where one term is used in conjunction with the other. A search for “cocksucker” by itself returns a much more generic pool of answers, including a bar-drink recipie, a song by the Rolling Stones, and a couple of sites with sexual content, including a gay personals site, a transexual porn page, and a page by an “amateur redhead female”.

FTR, I’m not arguing for either side of this, I’m just arguing that true highground is impossible for either side unless they can bring better-than-anecdotal support to the table.

You’ve already won a lot of ground, Minty et al, in that at least a portion of dopers seem to have agreed to not use the word because their fellow dopers find it offensive. But if you’re going to argue that there’s some absolute right and wrong, then you have to back up your statement.

And the other tactic, of course, is to pour on the gasoline…

For what it’s worth, I have made a great amount of effort on giving up the word “sucks,” on the basis that sucking is good. I try to say that things bite now.

I appreciate this, and I imagine KellyM and the other transgendered people on the board do too.

To clarify, minty, the original thread which started this stupid brouhaha was about this case.
I’ll quote the opening paragraph of this news story since you seem incapable of reading it on your own:

In short one of the cocksuckers who beat a child to death WAS A FUCKING WOMAN.
First of all I am fucking disgusted that more people are jumping on stinkpalm’s case for his choice of words than seem to be upset about these fucking child-murdering fucks. Second of all, I asked on the second page of this thread what good it does to accuse a non-'phobe of hating us; no one has even attempted to answer my point.

Jesus fucking christ people, get your priorities straight.

I didn’t answer your point, grendel, but I did congratulate it!

And, minty, couldn’t the boss in Stinkpalm’s example have been a woman? <sarcasm>Or is “boss” another word that only applies to men?</sarcasm>

Re: Fuck them up their asses
There was a case not too long ago around here where a woman raped a man with a cucumber in the nether regions. I even dare to say that it is not a gender-exclusive term, as both genders are equally capable of fucking someone up the ass.

This silly shit again. Stinkpalm, I accept that you do not hate homesexuals, nor relate the term cocksucker to gay people. Hell, a cocksucker can be male or female for sure. I also would like to see cites that show the origin of the negative meaning was in reference to homosexuals. I suspect this is false.

Either way it’s stupid. Histories of words can be rendered incosequential by context, inflection and intent. The kids need to lighten up and fight the battles worth fighting. So many want to hear what you didn’t say when what you did say is so clear. It gives people a chance to ride their high horses for a bit. Nothing unites people like a strawman with the letters PC on him. Like a shark and blood. No offense to good pool players with questionable gambling ethics.

Laughable.

With the exception of this thread and its two cousins, here is every Pit thread from the last year in which the word “cocksucker” appears, with the link describing the target of the epithet and/or its context:

Context indicates male (women complaining about bosses and coworkers while exercising at all-female gym).

Bud Selig.

Gay male (self-identification usage in a “take back the language” thing).

Unclear (things you might hear in a Slipknot song).

Hamadryad ironically applies it to herself because she says it’s literally descriptive. Lots o’ cock in that thread, thanks to a homophobic troll who uses “chugging cock” as a pejorative.

Gay male target (employed in response to “fucking breeder” comment).

Boris Karloff (as described by Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood).

Male.

Unclear (though my money says the solid majority of differential calculus teachers are male).

andros likes it (no context, just the word).

Gay male: matt_mcl applies it to himself to taunt pkbites.

Indeterminate usage by Ace0Spades.

Male.

No target (just used as a bad word).

Male (and from a recognized homophobe).

No target (just gratuitous Pit swearing).

Same thing.

Finally, a woman! Poor little TA, all by herself. :frowning:

Gratuitous pit cussing, again.

Slip Mahoney (male).

Bankers (a predominantly male group to start with, and the bankers in question seem especially so in context).

Duck Duck Goose takes the position that it’s generic rather than homophobic (no indication of gender, however), and Rasa follows up with comments that closely resemble my own position. (Hey, where is DDG these days, anyway?)

Unspecific.

Male.

Gratuitous Pit cussing.

Same.

Neutral (refers to a repetitive commercial).

Male.

Male.

Gratuitous Pit cussing.

Opposition to gratuitous Pit cussing.

Gratuitous Pit cussing.

That’s 32 threads. Discounting the 3 ironic self-identifications and the 15 neutral or Pit-cussing posts, that’s 11 positive identifications of men as the target, 2 strongly associated with male professions, and 1 woman. Thus, based on our sample, a man is between 11 and 13 times more likely to be called a cocksucker than a woman.

Gee, what could explain the nature of that gender discrepancy in usage?

Interesting that you choose to discount this thread and the thread that inspired it, since in the case y’all are bitching about the word was used to refer to a female.

In this thread someone uses offensive stereotypes in their name-calling of a fucked-up kitten torturer, and has gotten a few complaints but mostly agreement- even those who were offended by the language felt the need to curse the kitten-torturers (rightly so). In the thread that inspired this one someone used a term that some find offensive to refer to people who beat a child to death, those who felt the need to complain completely ignored the real point of the poster. The complainers even ignored the fact that one of the killers was a woman and insisted that the term “cocksucker” is homophobic because it is only used to refer to men when the very post being complained about was refferring to a woman as a cocksucker.

You people have truly fucked-up priorities, placing the supposed offensiveness of a term that some of us who are supposedly being badmouthed above the death of a child- when it’s a fucking cat (and don’t get me wrong, I love cats, I have a cat at home and nobody better even think of hurting her) you can overcome your distaste at “offensive” language at least long enough to acknowledge the OP and say, “yes, that was a heinous thing somebody did”.

In short, you people are a bunch of mean-spirited cocksuckers- attacking someone who has never given any indication of being a 'phobe because the language he used in his rant didn’t meet your standards. The next time someone has a legitimate complaint of homophobia this incident will stand out in some people’s memories and they may say, “fuck 'em, they get upset over the silliest things.” Or to put it another way, quit crying wolf you stupid bastards.
