When did the Weekly World News get so nasty?

I’m a sucker for a good WWN space story, and this week’s cover story was “Strange Breed of Cat Found on Moon of Saturn.” What’s not to love, right?

Well, damn! It was nothing but a nasty anti-French screed about how it was a miracle the spacecraft ever got to Titan because it was assembled by the French, and the “Frogs” were hiding data from their collaborators, and so on. (No link. Trust me, you don’t want to read it; it’s just stupid and unfunny. Also, I can’t find it online.)

What the hell! I was planning on putting the article on my office door, but given the tone and content that would be totally inappropriate.

Looking around there’s some other stuff in the issue, almost everything else is mean-spirited tripe, too. Not that it hasn’t always been tripe, but from time to time it was amusing tripe.

Has there been an editorial shift?

I Don’t even pick it up for a chuckle, anymore. It’s as though Ed Anger was promoted to editor. They’ve even got some backlash in the local press, because they listed Jason Schecterle as one of the ‘10 ugliest people in America’ or some such. He’s a local hero, a police officer horribly burned on duty.

I do want one of those Saturn Moon Cats, though.

I was about to comment on their apparent slant, but then I found this gem…
