Rocket J. Squirrel
I was going to say Battle of the Planets, but Jason from that, the cool one who had an F1 car and was really moody.
And I think he died, but came back because they only thought he died and he was kind of a cyborg or something.
Nothing is ever what it seems with redubbing and editing a japanese cartoon.
Batman and Spider-Man.
And Marvin the Martian.
I had such a crush on AquaMan.
He was blonde, he could breathe underwater, and he could talk to dolphins.
Hummina hummina hummina.
I saw a drawing of the Superfriends that depicted Superman giving orders to all of the others. To each, he assigned some important task, and then turned to Aquaman and said, “And you go… talk to some fish or something” (can’t remember exact words, but that was the general idea.) All the other superheroes are giggling at Aquaman. That’s one thing that always cracked me up about the Superfriends - they had to rig the stories so that the Legion of Doom’s plans always included aspects which allowed each and every Superfriend to use his or her specific power. I would wonder, “Why don’t they just have one or the other of the heroes be on vacation or something so that we can see an original story?”
Anyway, when I was a wee lad my favorite cartoon character was Underdog. This was in the 1970s.
*When criminals in this world appear
And break the laws that they should fear
And frighten all who see or hear
The cry goes up both far and near
For Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!
Speed of lightning, roar of thunder
Fighting all who rob or plunder
Underdog. Underdog!
I remember being like 4 years old and always getting called to dinner in the middle of Underdog (or sometimes worse, at the start!) I would sneakily try to leave the TV on even though I was told to turn it off just so I could hear it. It never worked though.
I loved Crusader Rabbit (yes, me too, Silenus), Bugs Bunny, and later, Rocky and Bullwinkle, (I still have a real fondness for Russian accents) because they were funny. But they weren’t really heroes, you see, they were comedians. My hero at an extremely young age was Mighty Mouse. The only opera I ever loved until Moulin Rouge!
Danger Mouse! (Which I think was sometimes paired with Banana Man.)
First hero, around age 4, was Underdog. A little later, like age 6, it was Wonder Woman. My associates did not consider her gender-appropriate for me, so I had to switch allegiances (publicly, anyway) to the Flash (I did like him a lot, though). finally, around age 8, I threw my lot in with Racer X.
G-Force. No particular favourites, I just wanted to be one of them. A little later, it was Pole Position, about two talking race cars and their drivers. Everyone wanted the sleek sports one. Me and my friends used to sing Pole Positioooon all hte way to schools
Ah, memories…
He-Man, all the way.
Astroboy. Most definitely.
My little sister was in love with Astroboy and wanted to marry him when she grew up. I wanted to be Astroboy, or rather Astrogirl since I have two X chromosomes. I had a huge crush on Astroboy’s arch-enemy, Atlas.
Yep, you best hang your head in shame, Small Clanger. My boy Astro Boy would have been all over Marine Boy’s ass like white on rice.
I used to fold a wire coat hanger over so I could wear it on my head in imitation of Astro Boy’s horns (I think I let the hook part go in front, to make a vaguely Superman-like spit-curl – hey, I was six). And I spent my birthday money buying a record with the Astro Boy theme song from the Helm’s Bakery driver.
My mom insists I was a major Popeye fan at the age of two.
I disavow all knowledge of the sailor.
What, am I the first to mention Voltron? I spent a good part of my childhood trying to figure out how to make a Blazing Sword.
And I had a crush on Gadget Hackwrench, but I don’t think that’s the same thing as “hero”.
As a very young child Mighty Mouse was my hero.
Later in life I learned to appreciate the dry humor of Droopy.
“What’s all the hubub, Bub?”
Wile E. Coyote, which I think says a lot about me.
Oh, and **Mighty Mightor ** (or however it was spelled).
Darn you, darn you to heck! You took my answer.
I need to go pout now.
Rocket…
Robin…
HOOOOOOD!
I was a HUGE Danger Mouse fan when I was little. I’m thinking it had to be the eyepatch.
Outside of that, Grimlock was my favorite. Something about being big, dumb, strong and invincible was just appealing to me.
