Where are the Christmas movies this year?

In looking around there are just 2. Almost Christmas and Office Christmas Party. neither seem that good.

What happened to movies like Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, Elf, The Santa Clause, Miracle on 34th Street, Christmas with the Kranks, Home Alone, and others?

Thread relocated from IMHO to Cafe Society.

Not sure, but I don’t miss them.

Well, not true actually. Movies that take place at Christmas - Home Alone, Gremlins, Die Hard etc are great. Let’s have more of those - but I wonder (hopefully) if someone in Hollywood just this year decided “You know, I don’t think we need any more movies about how Christmas will be broken forever unless people believe in Santa

Sorry that’s a bit threadshitty, but really, they all blend into one. Please can we have more movies set in and around the Christmas Holiday, and fewer Movies about The Christmas?

You know those didn’t all come out in the same year, don’t you?

Is this year really all that different from previous years?

This year also brings us Bad Santa 2.

Linking here to Wikipedia’s list of Christmas movies.

2010 had 3.
2011 had 2.
2012 had 3.
2013 had 4.
2014 had 3.
2015 had 6.
2016 has 3.

So, after last year’s “bonanza” of Christmas films, this year might seem a bit light, but it’s actually pretty average.

And three of the 2015 holiday films are actually horror movies. I think part of it is the easy availability of old movies on DVD or streaming. So if you need your Christmas movie fix, you can get it at home.

There’s also Krampus: The Devil Returns. 1.7/10 rating by IMDb users. (No RT rating.) Stream it now!

Never mind, misunderstood the OP.

Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party, Almost Christmas- but yeah- Family Christmas films this year are nada. They are re-releasing The Polar Express, which shows you that they realize it.

They’re on the Hallmark Channel - http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/christmas/2016-holiday-movies

One thing I’ve noticed over the years - Christmas sure needs saving a lot.

I think Santa is kidnapped more often than Princess Peach

Or it could be “nobody’s watching anything except ‘Rogue One’ this Christmas anyway, so why not just save the Christmas movie until 2017”.

Moana, Fantastic Beasts and Doctor Strange are also all playing at my local multiplex (and Sing starts next week). So there are plenty of family-friendly options if you need one, even if there aren’t any holiday-themed family movies.

But Dec 2017 is going to have Star Wars Episode 8… so that wouldn’t work either.

So it’s the Star Wars franchise that has a war against Christmas, after all? :stuck_out_tongue:

But yeah, the “Christmas movie” library is one that was accumulated over the years and most years there was no real “Christmas Classic” bursting forth.

Hollywood realizes they’ll never make a better xmas movie than Die Hard.
