I’m planning for 10.5 months in East and Southeast Asia starting this summer. Here is my current itinerary:
Flying from NYC to Taipei, with a possible layover in Seoul for a quick visit.
Taiwan: 29 days, make my way counterclockwise around the island by train, bus and bicycle.
Fly from Taipei to Singapore
Singapore: 7 days, visit the zoo and enjoy the cuisine.
Malaysia: 20 days, travel up the western part of the peninsula.
Thailand: 43 days, check out a couple of islands, hang out in Bangkok, make my way to the north country and end with a half-day in Myanmar.
Laos: 30 days, starting in the north and hitting the major towns before doing some motorbiking and Mekong-lounging in the south.
Cambodia: 26 days, Angkor, Phnom Penh, hit the beach, spend a few days near the coast on the way to Vietnam.
Vietnam: 30 days, explore the Mekong Delta, Saigon, slowly make my way north to Hanoi, spend a week outside of the capital in the mountains and by the sea.
China (Mainland): 30 days in Guangxi / Guangdong
Macau & Hong Kong: 11 days
China (Mainland): 91 days, covering a lot of territory here, head west into the mountains of Yunnan, then backtrack and go to Guizhou, north to Chongqing, west to Sichuan, up to Shaanxi, east to Henan, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, north to Shandong, Tianjin, Beijing and Liaoning.
Flying back from Dalian or Beijing to NYC.
Possible extensions to this trip include Indonesia and Mongolia, but these seem to be too inconvenient to be worthwhile. If Kim Jong Ill kicks the bucket and things open up in North Korea, I’ll leave China early and spend a couple of weeks there! Unlikely, but it would be extremely interesting.
