We are planning a trip to France the last two weeks of August before school starts back up for the little Gases, 7 & 10. We’ll be spending at least a week in Paris and at least a few days near Tour with some friends of the family. Mrs. Gas (aka BakingWithElectricity) showed me a Paris hotel room that she likes–for EUR 455 per night
So I’m broadening the search to include other hotels and possibly weekly apartments rather than a conventional hotel.
Any recommendations for specific lodging, or places to conduct such a search would be welcome.
I don’t have anything specific. But I just wanted to mention that all that is really key is that whereever you stay, so long as you’re reasonably close to a Metro (subway) station, that is all that matters. The Metro is very convenient (get a week pass, if you’ll be there that long), and you can get all over the city.
With this in mind, I’ve had good luck with hotels.com for pricing. And they have decent maps which you can use to locate the proximity to Metro stations.
I don’t know if there are many places to stay in that area, but if you could find a bread and breakfast type of place in Montmarte, that would be ideal. It’s kind of up the hill from a Metro station, but would be a neat area to stay.
Here’s a good place to start: VRBO . I rented an apartment in the Latin Quarter in December was very happy with it. My sisters got an apartment through RentParis. We all loved the independence of having an apartment with a full kitchen and plenty of room.
Paris is relatively small and easy to navigate so as previously said location isn’t such a big deal. There are of course plenty of cheaper hotels but I think an appartement may be the way to go, sometimes it’s nice to just go to a supermarket and eat in you know? Not sure what your kids like doing but it might be nice to be near a park - the Buttes Chaumont, Jardins de Luxembourg for example.
I’m not good on places to stay here but you might find doing a search (or posting) on this travel forum helpful.
I’ve found great deals all over western Europe using hrs.com.
As usual, I’m going to advise to check the message boards on www.fodors.com . There are a zillion threads there about hotels and appartments in Paris, with recommandations by people who stayed there . Click on “Talk” then pick the “europe” Forum.
If you open a thread there, make sure to mention your budget.
