Broncos fan. Six months ago, this may have been a possibility. Shannahan’s been known to overlook character issues in favor of talent, but I don’t think the new regimen would consider it. Plus we have two good receivers in Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal.
However, I also figured he’d never consider trading a franchise quarterback for an unproven career backup… I’ve been wrong before.
Can’t we just eliminate this whole process and officially declare him a Raider? Al “Gimmie My Precious” Davis is the only owner I can imagine twisted enough to pull this trigger.
Tom Coughlin and T.O. do seem like a bad fit, but I’m not prepared to say the Giants wouldn’t take him, if certain conditions were met.
The Giants collapsed late last year when Plaxico Burress was lost, and Burress faces continued legal troubles. The Giants NEED a star receiver, and know it.
T.O. has everything except a ring. He MIGHT be willing to go to a quality team that doesn’t seem like a good fit, just for a chance to get to the Super Bowl. By going to the Giants, he’d get a solid shot at his ring AND get to be a hadache to Tony Romo and Jerry Jones.
If I were Ernie Accorsi, I’d look into signing T.O., if only for one season.
I could see the Patriots taking the same kind of gamble.
BOTH the Pats and the Giants have coaches, organizations and veterans who can stand up to T.O., who can say, “We’ve been champions without you. WE know what we’re doing and how to win. YOU don’t get to come in here and dictate terms to us.”
True, but I don’t see it happening. Just because they can stand up do him doesn’t mean he will listen. I just don’t see I any inclination for them to risk sabotaging their locker room and room team chemistry for a 35 year old, rapidly declining, very volatile receiver. Plus, can you see T.O. in an offense that features Randy Moss and Wes Welker? If he thought he wasn’t getting enough balls in Dallas…
Wait, Greg Lewis, formerly of the Eagles? That man would have trouble starting for a CFL team. I can’t see him making that much of an impact that it would negate the signing of T.O. Moss and Welker alone would probably suffice.
Speaking of the Eagles…McNabb always harps about needing playmakers and Owens is a…Nah, I can’t even consider it without going into an epileptic seizure. Would be interesting though.
I’m not saying Lewis is good, just saying that the Pats just traded for him, making another receiver addition that much less likely. But you’re right, Moss and Welker are enough reasons not to sign T.O.
PS. Though I wouldn’t count Lewis out as a contributor yet. No one had ever heard of Wes Welker until he joined the Pats offense.
Well he is decent on the special teams coverage unit. But if he couldn’t make it on the field for a team that was bereft of any receiver talent like the Eagles…I would be very shocked if he even makes the team.
(And for Elendil’s Heir, by he, I mean Terrell Eldorado Owens (bet you didn’t know that!))
Somebody will sign him, and it will probably be for a lot of money, and it probably won’t be a bad idea when they do.
Bender, I hate to say this because it will sound like I don’t think Greg Lewis is one of the 35 most worthless NFL players of the last 10 years, but… Jabar Gaffney.
I’m sure a lot of teams have no interest in him right now, but wait till after the draft and before training camp and some of these teams might discover that they could really use a wideout of TO’s caliber. Plus it’s much better from a negotiating standpoint to leave him twisting in the wind for awhile if you can.
It’s comical to think of TO coming here but I’ll play along just to register my support for the Bears if nothing else.
The Bears are a family run organization that places a sometimes unreasonably high value on character and chemistry. They do not suffer fools, only bad players.
The Mizers of the Midway simply don’t sign big money FAs, you can read the 2009 FA Thread to register my feeling on that issue.
The Bears a in dire need of a WR but they’ve shown no interest in baggage-free guys like Housh, Coles, Washington or Henderson, there’s little chance they open the checkbook for a 35 year old headcase.
The Bears offense is so conservative that TO wouldn’t want to play there. I don’t see a relationship between him and Orton ending well.
Oh, and another anti-Raider reason: Javon Walker restructured his contract, so he’ll be staying around. I think the Raiders will feel okay going into the season with Walker, Drew Carter (back from injury), Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schilens. And possibly a WR high in the draft like Crabtree or Maclin.
The interesting thing with T.O. might not be where he goes, but for how long. If a team can sign him for a one-year deal, that’d be great - he usually plays well his first year without causing problems. It’s beyond that first year he gets cancerous. Not to mention he probbaly doesn’t have more than one year in the tank.
