VIVA THE DUMBASS GAVEL SMILIE!
See, the whole idea of a debate with a “smashie” is just wrong. It totally detracts from the actual debate and turns it into a game of one-upmanship. The words are subsumed in a twitching cavelcade of oh-so-clever pre-made animations. “I don’t have to answer your points 'cos I can just pretend to be boinking you on the head!” How erudite.
The day Smashie appears in GD is the day I think very seriously about finding somewhere else to debate.

Well said.
I can see this happening even if smashie is not animated, and it would be just as annoying.
I can’t debate my way out of a paper bag, but I thoroughly enjoy the posts of those who can. I feel that smashie would detract from the high quality of the forum. He’d be more of a liability than an asset, IMO.
I vote for smashie. He was quite possibly the best smilie I ever saw. He just doesn’t look as good not animated, but I’ll gladly the frozen-in-time smashie as a compromise. Another use for FIT smashie is an “I Protest” smilie, as it kinda looks like he’s holding up a protestors sign.
Aren’t they just a drag on bandwidth?
I was a big fan of the rainbow gay smilie. And, smashie was cute. However, the animation seriously bothered me. So, I’m glad it’s gone.
vB 2.2.4 sites WITH smilies colored as (your diety here) intended.
and…
once you 'fess up and restore the colors…
WE WANT SMASHIE!!!
I’m for any emoticon that assists in fighting ignorance.
For that reason, I have emailed to tshirts a (rather crude) :dubious: icon.

:dubious: is somewhat milder than  ; it indicates general skepticism and raised eyebrows.
As in,
Oh, really? :dubious:
Alas, my attempt most closely resembles a smilie in need of a shave.
Perhaps others can do better. Another take on the same general idea might portray a figure with a magnifying glass.
Oh, and notwithstanding my 2nd smilie attempt, I agree that animated smilies are distracting, notwithstanding their aesthetic value.
I’m just glad the consensus is/was that his name is “smashie” and not “bonky”.
I want Smashie back – this time with sound effects!
Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!
I’ll give you smashie …
OG SMASHY!
Nah. A normal-sized smilie costs about 200-400 bytes – the equivalent of a few lines of text. Also, your browser only downloads the smilie the first time it encounters it – once the smilie is stored in your cache it is retrieved locally without taxing the server.

Couldn’t they just make an “ignore smileys” option for the whole board? Are smileys really that pertinent to discussion? Then those who want little smiley pictures all over the place can have them, and those who think they’re annoying like hemerrhoids can turn them off once and for all…
Exactly. The little gavel-pounding smiley may be gone, but he lives on in our hearts and in our minds and whenever someone says:
OG SMASH!
