Once upon a time, the phone hung on the wall in the kitchen or sat on a table in the living room or maybe even on the night stand. Then it went mobile, and before long, the musical question was “Where is my/your phone??”
Do you keep yours on your person? Does it have a designated spot in the house? Do you randomly have to call it in order to find it?
Since women’s pants are notorious for lacking pockets, I rarely have my phone on me. If we’re out and about, I have a pocket for it in my purse, but in the house, it might be on the table next to my recliner, or on my desk, or on the kitchen counter, or on the piano, or, or, or… well, you get the idea. I try to keep it by the recliner, just out of reach of my toddler grandson. But when I go to the basement, I need to take it with me. Or when I mow the lawn…
Mine would spend well over 90% of the time next to the monitor on my desk. About weekly it is on the charger for a few hours. Once in a while I make a call or use it while watching something on TV. Occasionally I take it with me when I leave the house.
It’s not on my person when I’m home, and I don’t take it from room to room , but it’s generally on the same floor as I am, unless I’m going up/downstairs for a few minutes, like to move laundry from the washer to the dryer.
We ditched the landline. It was unreliable (only person on that trunk). We live remote. I put a cell phone antenna, booster on the roof.
I’m one of those guys that wears a phone in a holster on my hip. That’s just where it is. I always just wear a fleece over a tee shirt, so it is not seen. But If I’m sitting on the couch or my computer, I can always get to the phone easily and quickly. I can’t imagine putting the thing in my pocket. How do you even do that?
I’m often either at home, or 100 miles away taking care of my mothers ‘estate’. I never know where in the hell I’m gonna be week to week. It’s nice to just have one number.
If it’s not in my purse because I just got home from somewhere, it’s probably on the end table next to my usual spot on the sofa. Could be on the kitchen counter or a shelf near the front door if I just got a delivery and had to go outside to help the delivery person find me. I do occasionally have to make use of Google’s Find My Device to force it to ring so I can track it down.
We do still have a landline, and that phone lives on DH’s computer desk. Problem there is accessing it in a reasonably timely manner under the clutter.
It’s in my front left pocket, where it is likely to be found most of the time if I’m awake. Occasionally it’s on my desk or nightstand charging, or in the cupholder of the car, or on a side table if I’m wearing a pair of pants where it slips out while I’m sitting on the couch.
It’s either on my charger next to my bed at night or on my belt’s holster during the day. I leave it by my comfy chair in the morning until I shower and dress, and if the battery is low, I charge it when I’m in the car. I rarely, if ever, misplace it.
My wife’s phone could be anywhere at any time. We used to spend a lot of time looking for it, but now she can ping it with her Apple watch, which usually works.
Overnight, we have a charging station in the kitchen where all phones are parked. This includes two teenage girls who would likely not sleep at night otherwise.
On my nightstand plugged in if I’m in bed. In my right front pants pocket if I’m upright. Sitting on an adjacent table or chair arm if I’m seated. In its car charger/holster if I’m in the car.
Every time I stand up or sit down, the phone moves to/from my pants pocket. Period. Do I screw up occasionally? Sure. But it feels really weird not to have that heavy thing in that one pocket and I rarely get more than a few feet away from it before I notice its absence.
You didn’t ask, but my Bluetooth headset is effectively attached to the phone. If it’s not in my ear, which it isn’t unless I’m yakking, it’s right next to the phone and I never move one without moving the other. Or at least as close to “never” as a human can do.
I’ve spent most of my work life carrying lots of paraphernalia while out in public in places where stuff will disappear if left alone for a moment and where going back to get something is rarely practical even if somehow it was still there when you got back there. One of the consequences of that is a finely honed sense of “Don’t set it down unless you absolutely must, and don’t forget it when you leave.”
I wish we could somehow go back to phones small enough that the pocket-to-table-to-pocket dance wasn’t needed. But until they can somehow beam the display into my retina or directly my brain we’re probably stuck with phones about as big as they are now.
In my hand or on the night stand next to the bed. If I’m doing chores, on my hip playing music through the earbuds or nearby playing music through a main speaker either on board or bluetooth connected
The ota radio music scene here is a top 40 hellscape and I haven’t watched tv at my house in over a year
For those of you who have the phone always at hand while awake, how often do you think you use it during the day? Right now I’m typing on a MacAir laptop. I prefer the size/keyboard so much more than the phone, and it is no effort to carry it around my house as needed. The only reason I bring my phone with me when driving is in the unlikely event that I am involved in a car accident.
Heck, yesterday I ran to the grocery for some last minute things. I called my wife from the store to ask if she wanted this or that. She said “this” so I hung up and put the phone in my pocket. As I got in the car, I felt the phone vibrate and the call came thru my car. She had immediately reconsidered and had been trying to call/text me to request “that,” but I was oblivious. On checking, I saw that I had the phone in silent mode. Have NO IDEA when I did that. Most likely 1.5 months ago when we attended a Broadway play…
No, having ready access to my phone at all times is NOT a high priority for me!
