Hello my good beatle!! Back we are… I’ve been sobbing for hours while spasticly clicking refresh on my browser.
I don’t suppose that anyone would care to explain what just happened there.
I didn’t even know the MB was down until I hit Una’s board then Fathom…egads, that’s what a week terribly limiting your internet access will do. I miss out on all the fun.
How long was it down? I was on here about noon-ish today. Then when I got home at about 8:30pm (Central Time), it was gone. Just curious.
It went back up between 11 and midnight Eastern time.
Anybody else notice that a great number of posts made today prior to the Mysterious Blackout are now missing? I feel bad for Mike Turk, who had a whole lot of good suggestions piling up in his thread before things went kablooie. They’re all gone now.
I was surfing on the boards right when it went down. One weird thing I noticed was under pldennison’s name where it usually says “member” it said: “Face it, I’m right, you’re wrong”. Tried to load another page and poof, nothing. 
Your passwords may well have been compromised - take the earliest opportunity to change your password.
So why would anyone hack into the SMDB? Weird. As is that thing about “Face it, I’m right, you’re wrong”. Maybe some argument over in Great Debates got a little too fierce…

Hey forgive me for being a newbie but how do I go about changing my password? I certainly wouldn’t want to be compromised now would I?

Look in the upper right corner of the page, beside the big “The Straight Dope” logo. Click on “Profile”, and log into your profile using your handle and current password. Your profile will come up, and you can replace your password (Don’t forget: You’ll have to type it in two places).
Now about your uniform…
Also, you could make wild leaps of logic, and come to the conclusion that someone has probably asked this in ATMB, and look over there.
As a matter of fact, everyone should read everything in ATMB and check everything new hourly, day and night. Even test threads.
OK, maybe not, but it does get lonely over there sometimes.
It sure is good to have SD back. I actually spent some time doing something constructive yesterday. shudder
