Adam Sandler, Julia Roberts, and Seth Rogen are the names that pop immediately into my head up reading the question. Sandler I think is a talentless boob and it comPLETEly mystifies me how he’s still able to make movies. Julia Roberts I’ve never liked. Even when I was young and horny I never thought she was anything special. And I still don’t. Quite how she came to be referred to as “America’s Sweetheart” when A) she’s NOT that good-lookin’ (at least not as far as I’m concerned) and B) she’s a home-wrecker (didn’t she “steal” someone’s husband away from her?) is quite beyond me. Seth Rogen…maybe it’s not him that I dislike so much but the movies he’s in. I think they’re all terrible. Okay - to be fair, the only movie I’ve ever actually seen him in is Knocked Up (which I thought was epically stupid - matter of fact I left the theater before it finished - haven’t done that too many times in my life) but after that the mere thought of him being in something suggests to me that it won’t be any good, so I don’t bother.
:smack: … But did you watch Bound ?
I can’t believe I forgot to mention Matthew McCaughney(or however you spell it; I’m not googling that dude lest a picture of him pop up). It’s not just that he’s unattractive to me- obviously everyone’s mileage varies- he’s so repellent that it boggles my mind how he attained hearthrob status. I will give him credit for furthering his career by choosing some great roles, which he actually performed really well: Mud, The Paperboy, Killer Joe are all great flicks. But fuck me, with all his gazillions could he not get dentures that fit? Between the chicklet look and the whistle, I really have a hard time focusing. And that stupid drawl . . . don’t actors regularly employ voice coaches to ride themselves of that kind of thing? I don’t avoid his movies because again, he’s been making some great choices but I find myself watching *in spite *of him. Don’t get me started on those insufferable Lincoln commercials. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
This.
I’ve always thought that he was a better dramatic actor than a comedian.
Mary Steenburgen
Andie McDowell
Julia Roberts
William Hurt
Leonardo DiCaprio
What’s his name? The no-talent guy from SNL who things talking in a “funny” voice and screwing up his face is actually funny…over and over and over again. Oh yeah. Adam Sandler.
I would like to add Emily Deschanel. There is something about her voice that grates on me.
My husband dislikes watching things with me because I’m always complaining about the actors (not while we are watching, usually). I agree with just about every name on here, which is making me wonder. Who do I actually like watching?
That one’s easy for me: Salma Hayek!
Meg Tilly was big back in the eighties when she did The Big Chill, Agnes of God and Valmont. But then she did some more forgettable movies and decided to take a ten year break from acting.
This describes about 50% of the male cast (and a fair portion of the female cast) of SNL.
My current can’t stand (due to binging on L&O: SVU) is Marcia Gay Harden. She seemed all right in **Pollack[:b], but I think I first began to hate her in The Mist. That loud mouthed, obnoxious religious fanatic did me in. And since then, that smug face and attitude seems ever-present and it drives me bonkers. I even just saw her in a tiny bit part in The Hoax and she was so awful that I just wanted to reach through the screen and punt her into Never Never Land. Ugh.
Did you see the later episode of L&O:SVU where her character’s story comes up again and takes a *very *interesting turn?
She came forward a few years ago about the childhood sexual abuse she and her sisters endured. A heavy load for anyone, and maybe too much to bear along with celebrityhood as well. Jennifer’s little-girl-voice affectation is hard to take, knowing about that.
Another pair of sisters who also were victims were Paula and Ann Prentiss. Paula attempted suicide on set and took a few years off. Ann, lacking a supportive spouse like Paula had in Richard Benjamin, eventually died in prison. Sad.
No. I haven’t watched as much of the newer ones. I prefer the chemistry with Elliot. Plus, I now avoid anything with her in it like the plague.
ETA: Wait. Should I? Do they kill her slowly and painfully? Does someone wear her like a hat? If so, I might chance it.
I never could stand Alan Arkin. Yelling does not equal funny. Yelling louder does not equal funnier. Mr. Arkin never seemed to understand this. Or his fans.
Oh, honey…trust me. Feeling as you do, you DEFINITELY want to seek out that episode and watch it. I believe you will find it immensely rewarding. I shall say no more.
I knew of the Tilly twins, but I didn’t know Jennifer had a sister.
I’ve mentioned Thomas Gibson before. The only times I see him are when I’m idly flipping through channels. I have to laugh when I see his “intense” beetlebrowed scowl. He’s just terrible.
No, because I automatically reject any movie that she’s in. The only one I’ve seen where she seemed to actually understand what an actor is supposed to do was Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway (1994). Coincidentally, it’s just about the only Woody Allen movie that I can stand.
Speaking of which, Woody Allen as an actor.
Just never have seen it. Allen seems to only have only one expression, the pasty-faced whiny nerd, that he wears in every film I’ve seen him in, and for all his (admitted) genius, he’s a complete deal-breaker for me in a movie.
He’s basically the same character in every movie. If such a person were in my life, he would not be so for long. Life is too short to spend any time on such an annoying person.
Kenneth Branagh played the Woody Allen character in Celebrity. It was a like a 2 hour Woody Allen impression. It was even less pleasant than that sounds.
There are several actors I just do not like, in addition to Woody Allen.
Leonardo Di Caprio - he will always be a pasty faced kid to me. I cannot take him seriously in anything.
Terrance Howard - they say he’s good…but I just don’t see it. Probably because I just don’t like his face.
I think he’s better in dramatic roles. The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter stands out for me.
