Which classic movies are begging for a sequel? Rules in OP

Inspired by the upcoming Beetlejuice movie. Which classic movies have potential to have a successful sequel or remake made? Here are the rules.

  1. By classic, I mean movies from 1974 - 1999, an admittedly arbitrary 25 to 50 years ago.

  2. The movie can’t already have a sequel or remake. A TV series, video game, book, comic book, etc. are acceptable.

Given those two restrictions, which movies do you think have potential to have a good sequel or remake made? I have a few ideas, but I’d like to see what you all think before I mention my ideas.

Goonies came to mind immediately.
Maybe Big, though I’ll be honest and I’m not sure where it should go.

For some ideas of classic movies from 1974-1999:

Big Trouble in Little China

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

Almost every minor character in Pulp Fiction has a feature film’s worth of fascinating backstory.

I would love to see the Coen brothers do a remake of Unforgiven.

Doctor Detroit II: The Wrath of Mom.

Definitely underrated. I showed this to a bunch of grad student friends back in 1995. They were skeptical, but came around to liking it after a few minutes.

Silverado. After all, the last line in the movie is “We’ll be back!”

FORREST GUMP: what happened next? We know what happened next. We just don’t know who did what…

I have always thought that “The Continuing Misadventures of Jules Winfield” could make a cool movie. Given that Jules is not present alongside Vincent and Marsellus Wallace in the last (chronological) portions of the film, it can be assumed that he made good on his promise to leave his criminal life behind. It could be interesting to learn what became of Jules after that.

“The Two Eddies”?

Buckaroo Banzai VS The World Crime League was released as a novel a few years ago.

That’s one way to go. Part of the fun of the original movie was seeing Disney and Warner Bros characters in the same scene. So imagine what could be done with recent animated characters, like perhaps Woody from Toy Story.

In a sense, that’s what they did in the 2022 Chip ’n Dale movie (which was widely regarded as a “spiritual successor” to Roger Rabbit).

BIG 2: Still Small
Follow the antics of Josh Baskin and his sidekick Billy as they navigate sixth grade, struggle with homework, and play pranks on enemies and friends alike. When their dummy (who looks a little too much like a bloody Mrs. Pertwilliger) gets thrown out of her classroom window into traffic, will Billy rat out his friends, or take the detention all by himself?
Cast: David Moscow, Jared Rushton, Not Tom Hanks.

Figure a girl walks into the classroom?

Just looking over science fiction movies from that era. These movies have the potential for great sequels or remakes but I’d expect if attempted most of the results wouldn’t be very good. Sequels and remakes rarely reach the heights of the original, even when the original set a low bar. But that’s not the fault of the original, it’s just what happens in Hollywood.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
