Which is an easier threshold: 2/3 majority in both houses or wall funding?

Are you nuts? You think WE should pay 5 BILLION just to appease a greased up maniac all while knowing it doesn’t solve a single problem?

Trump is a toddler mid-tantrum and you think a 5 billion dollar pacifier is a reasonable solution.

This country is full of the most wrong-headed individuals. We really earned this mess. :smack:

I’m going to say yes.

Trump basically wandered into a minefield on camera when she and Schumer went to see him about the budget. Aside from the Freedom Caucus in the House, the GOP is relatively quiet about anting to fund the wall. Early poll data shows the political backlash is likely to land on Trump. Even a third of Republicans in that poll think Trump should compromise to avoid a shutdown.

Unless the electorate shifts, I expect she’ll let him keep dancing in the minefield.

Trump created some of the most self-devastating soundbites in that little tantrum he threw on camera. It was hilarious hearing her ask him quietly not to do this with cameras in the room which just emboldened him more.

We have it on tape. He OWNS this shut down. He will take this mantle. He won’t blame anyone else. He’s PROUD to shut down the government.

American’s memories aren’t that short, he’s not going to hot-potato this into being anyone else’s problem.

All of this over what amounts to truck nuts in the form of a static statue. Just a big penis monument for an egomaniac.
If we have billions of extra dollars for such a boondoggle then I have some teachers and veterans you need to meet.

Also no republicans EVER get to complain about the deficit ever again without having this shoved right down their throat. I know they’ll complain but I will forever remind them how frivolous they were under Trump.

I’m pretty sure a extended government shutdown will end up costing a lot more than 5 billion. I vaguely remember reports that the last gov. shutdown cost a lot.

Especially if this triggers a stock market crash.

DHS has plans for this money. It won’t be wasted.

I feel so bad for the government workers who will be caught up in this mess.

C’mon. Really? Is this what Republicans are going with?
If the economy tanks, it’s on the Democrats for refusing to fund Trump’s folly.
??

(That Mexico is going to pay for.)

i’m still betting the Republicans will blink and there will be a veto override. This could be Trump’s Waterloo.

Mexico is going to pay for the wall. Trump promised over and over again EMPHATICALLY. You probably yelled along with him–“who is going to pay for the wall?” MEXICO!!!

What about that? Just going to pretend that never happened? You have literally no rebuttal to justify this? But you think Americans “owe” Trump this absurd amount of money to accomplish something he swore Mexico was going to pay for?

Trump said just two days ago that the wall is a distraction from how secure our borders are. He said the caravans are done and over and no one got through because we have the tightest border.

Care to expand on that tweet and tell me why we need a wall? What it will accomplish?

At least we agree the money is nothing more than to placate a crying baby.

Cost to the economy, or cost to the government? This article says the 16-day shutdown in 2013 cost the government $2.5 billion, mostly back pay for furloughed government workers. Since the current shutdown is a partial shutdown, and it’s happening at a time when a lot of government workers are on leave anyway, it should cost less per day.

Cost to the economy is greater, of course, because the furloughed government workers and contractors spend less.

The less theatrical but more significant problem for him is the ongoing free-falling market. I’m sure that quite a few big donors who are taking a bath have made it clear to the Republican (snort) “leadership” that they will control their toddler, or else.

Yes but once they get their back pay you would expect these workers to spend about what they would have spent anyways. They would make the same purchases of goods and services. I would imagine the real economic damage is to businesses that need to coordinate with federal offices, everything from contractors who are building things for the federal government, to businesses that need approval from the feds to do something. (to ship a product overseas, to deploy a product that emits RF on FCC licensed bands, etc etc etc)

McConnell can change the rules if he chooses to require just 50 votes for the border security bill.

Wasn’t Chuck Schemer for better border security when Obama was President?

Better border security ≠ “The Wall”.

I am absolutely amazed at the mental gyrations you folks are going through to convince yourself that this Presidental tantrum is the fault of the Democrats.

It isn’t, it won’t been seen as such, and the Dems aren’t going to cave on such an openly racist policy.

Look, here’s the thing- skip the wall and what’s it about. What it is really about is the the House sets the budget. Not the Oval Office. The President doesnt get to decide what goes in the budget. Trump is usurping the duties of the legislative branch.

My guess is both sides will eventually negotiate to some fraction of $5B for “border security” and DT will build some small sections of wall in strategic locations and declare victory, which it will be since his base will inevitably eat it up. Of course, the wildcards in all of this are acting presidents Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham.

63 million people voted for this moron. They will blame anything and everything on the democrats before they admit they where conned.

I’m for it. Here’s my minimum position for the Dems: Clean up the messes he’s made, and we’ll let him fulfill his campaign promises:

  • Puerto Rico fully restored to pre-hurricane levels of power, infrastructure, and services. After all, Trump claimed he helped them, so this should be free, right?

  • Every child currently in a concentration camp or private prison reunited with their parents. No more excuses. Full citizenship granted to every child affected, the parents get green cards. After all Trump blamed all these problems on the Dems.

  • Either all provisions of the ACA restored, fully funded, and advertised, or a replacement plan that covers everybody put in place. After all, Trump has a “great, great plan.”

  • “Catch and release” restored to prevent this happening again. After all, Trump said this policy was all the Dems fault.

  • DACA fully funded and made permanent. After all, Trump claimed he was for it, and it’s just the Dems preventing it.

  • Congress passes, and Trump signs, a bill that congressional districts in every state need to be drawn by a non-partisan committee of non-politicians not from that state. After all, Trump says he just wants elections to be fair.

  • The full restoration of every National Park and momument to pre-Trump levels. After all, Trump claims to support the environment.

  • Support the impeachment of Justice Kavenaugh for the well-documented lies told during his hearings, and give the position to either Merrick Garland or choose from a list provided by the Democrats. After all, Trump promised us the “best people” and that he’d “drain the swamp”

  • The immediate release of Trump’s tax forms for the last ten years. After all, Trump said he would release them.

  • Complete compliance with the Mueller investigation, including in-person interviews. After all, Trump says that justice is extremely important, he has nothing to hide, and there was NO COLLUSION.

  • An explanation for what “Covfefe” is, just because we want to know.

Once all of these things are complete, he can have his $5 billion for the wall. Since it’s estimated to cost about $30 billion dollars, and Trump said Mexico wold pay for it, the money shall be doled out as $1 in matching funds for every $5 Mexico voluntarily contributes.

That’s my final position. How 'bout it?

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) was the stopgap measure for people who were brought into the country illegally as children. It just defers their deportation. It makes no sense to make it permanent. What we need is amnesty & full citizenship for those people.

Trump blinked before. I see no reason he won’t again. He had funding for his wall but let it die, and then signed a bill that didn’t include funding.

And then we have what happened with Kim Jung Un. All he had to do was give him a rhetorical scrap, and Trump ate it up. Dems can give some token thing that doesn’t matter, and he’ll believe he won.

And, finally, there are other Republicans that can feel the pressure if Trump doesn’t. We don’t need very many to override him. And once Trump sees that he could be overridden, he won’t have to be.

Not if Trump vetoes. The 2/3 majority to override a veto is built into the Constitution.
