Which of these do you think will still be around in 10 Years?

Paris Hilton – Famous for being famous. Will be totally forgotten.

STAR TREK (any incarnation) – Still around. It’s lasted this long, hasn’t it?

Sanjaya – What?

Rosie O’Donnell – Probably still around; she’s been fairly well-known for a good deal longer than ten years, right?

Donald Trump – Ditto.

Harry Potter – Still around. Children’s books have excellent staying power, since there’s always a new set of readers coming along. I would expect the HP books to stay in print for at least as long as the Chronicles of Narnia have been.

Justin Timberlake – I’m not even really sure who he is, so I’d guess gone.

Angelina Jolie – Dunno. I’d guess still around.

Reality Television – Probably a fad.

CNN – Still around, definitely.

Fundamentalist Islam – Will be with us for a long, long time, although I don’t know whether it will still be the Enemy of the Week in ten years.

Christian Right as a major political influence – Hopefully gone, but I’m not betting on it.

Paris Hilton: Gone just like Jade Barrymore or Jessica Hahn.

STAR TREK (any incarnation) Still part of geekdom, but probably aging geekdom. The Original series hasn’t lost much Cache yet, I do not see 10 years killing the franchise. (I still love TOS, I am 40)

Sanjaya: Who? Seriously, give him a few months. Over half of the US does not watch that show. Wasn’t there some freak from the first season that was popular for about 2 years and is now gone from the popular conscious.

Rosie O’Donnell: She will probably be fading but not gone.

Donald Trump: He might be dead; otherwise, he will still be in the news and the public conscious.

Harry Potter: Fading but still popular, I do not believe this series will have the staying power of Tolkien or Lewis, but they should become a permanent part of childhood reading for those that like to read. It largely depends on where the Hogwarts Universe goes after Book 7. If she adds to the Universe with more books, it might be very popular still.

Justin Timberlake: I can’t tell if he will be a Jon Bon Jovi or a Steve Perry. He seems like he has a chance to keep a career going fairly strong.

Angelina Jolie: She will be around; 10 years will only make her 42. She will be fading; I would think she would be the equivalent of whatever Sharon Stone is today.

Reality Television: I hope it is dead and buried. I think it will be around and more outrageous to try to keep people’s interest.

CNN: It will be fine, no more or less popular than today.

Fundamentalist Islam: Still scary, still causing problems.

Christian Right as a major political influence: Less powerful, its power is beginning to fade. Falwell is gone and Robertson should follow him in the next 10 years.

Jim

Paris Hilton: Have people for some reason stopped staying in hotels? No? Then she still has more spending money for a week than I may make in the decade between now and then. So she’s still with us, but probably in increasingly odd and scandalous ways. Think Leona Helmsley.

STAR TREK (any incarnation): Still around.

Sanjaya: Boyish looks decaying into creepyness, sings at mall openings. An L list celebrity.

Rosie O’Donnell: Still around, with exactly the same amount of credibility (ie, very little) that she has now.

Donald Trump: He’s wealthy, will always have someone willing to help him stay that way, and has acquired a real taste for publicity now; he’ll be with us until he dies.

Harry Potter: Not a rival to Tolkein, certainly - but of course it’s not meant to be. Considered definitive children’s fantasy.

Justin Timberlake: Still here. Like Will Smith, we only remember that he started in music on the increasingly rare occassions that he releases an album; the rest of the time he’s a serviceable actor who never wins an Oscar but always is a little better than you think he will be.

Angelina Jolie: Still here, and hopefully, doing dirtier movies than she does nowadays.

Reality Television: Actually, I’d suspect that reality television will no longer be considered its own genre; reality TV and scripted TV will continue to blend until the separations between them are no longer particularly meaningful.

CNN: Why would CNN disappear?

Fundamentalist Islam: Yup, sadly.

Christian Right as a major political influence: Yup, sadly.

Paris Hilton - she’ll still be around but increasingly she’s seen as pathetic, even by start-struck youth. She won’t be front page news but she’ll still get her picture snapped by the paparazzi as she stumbles drunk and wasted out of a nightclub in her forties.

STAR TREK (any incarnation) - hopefully, the series will get reinvigorated and it’ll still be around.

Sanjaya - I actually think he might have some success as a pop star. He has quite the following with just his brief exposure so far and he seems to have natural charisma. He might surprise people.

Rosie O’Donnell - she’ll probably be retired but still realease the occasional outraged press release.

Donald Trump - probably still ingering

Harry Potter - I bet in 10 years they’ll be talking about remaking the movies.

Justin Timberlake - still around but increasingly reclusive

Angelina Jolie - not making movies

Reality Television - I dont’ think this will ever go away because it’s so cheap to produce but I suspect it’ll be much less populat than it is now.

CNN - it’s just another cable channel now

Fundamentalist Islam - we’ll always have fundamentalists but it sure owuld be nice if we’d change direction and stop pushing people towards it.

Christian Right as a major political influence - won’s disappear but hoepfully in ten years it’ll be much less of a force.

Paris Hilton- Completely Irrelevant and most likely forgotten.

STAR TREK (any incarnation)- Still around.

Sanjaya- Long forgotten.

Rosie O’Donnell- Still around but not as influential.

Donald Trump- Still around but not TV show.

Harry Potter- Still beloved by people but not with the same frenzy as before.

Justin Timberlake- Still around but not nearly as popular.

Angelina Jolie- People will know the name but she won’t be the star she is now.

Reality Television - No change. It is pretty cheap to produce compared to a sitcom.

CNN- Still around.

Fundamentalist Islam- Thriving and growing. They will be the new red menace for the 21st Century.

Christian Right as a major political influence. I don’t think that they are going anywhere. They may be forced to change somewhat, but I don’t see them going anywhere.

Star Trek will keep running until the Original Crew has to time travel forward to save the Future.

Paris Hilton - Still has a few issues to go through the public eye with: marriage, motherhood, a public renunciation of her wayward youth. But she’ll be mostly forgotten in ten years.

STAR TREK (any incarnation) - Will endure. Has survived in the underground before.

Sanjaya - Ten years? He’ll be forgotten in ten weeks.

Rosie O’Donnell - Will keep talking but people will stop listening.

Donald Trump - The same.

Harry Potter - Won’t be as huge as it is now but will settle in as a long term classic of children’s literature.

Justin Timberlake - Has surprised me. In the past I would have said he was due to fade away but I now think he has enough talent to last for awhile. Will still be making records in ten years.

Angelina Jolie - Her innate flakiness makes her future hard to predict.

Reality Television - Will fade from its peak but will endure. Television’s big enough for it to carve out an ongoing niche.

CNN - I see no reason for it to change. It seems like a sound business and news will always be a saleable product.

Fundamentalist Islam - It’s been around for a long time and isn’t going to disappear in the next ten years. However, it’s arguable as to whether we will still see it as a threat or will have moved on to some other enemy.

Christian Right as a major political influence - Impossible to call. The numbers will still be there but the strength of the movement requires leaders who can organize them into action.

[li]Paris Hilton- (5% chance) Won’t be a current name in the media but will evoke memories of the decade when mentioned.[/li][li]STAR TREK (any incarnation)- (100%) This is an undying institution. It’s here to stay, new series or not.[/li][li]Sanjaya- Who?[/li][li]Rosie O’Donnell- (30%) She’ll likely become entangled in some other scandal by then.[/li][li]Donald Trump- (15%) Will still be lurking in the shadows but won’t be a media forerunner.[/li][li]Harry Potter- (70%) May have some lasting value. Its fanbase will age and may attract a following in the next generation; albeit smaller.[/li][li]Justin Timberlake- (60%) His name is still fairly prominent in the media. I have no idea what he’s doing these days other than that he’s graduated from the Backsteet Boys or N’Sync or whatever band he was a part of.[/li][li]Angelina Jolie- Huh?[/li][li]Reality Television- (85%) Like rap music, like it or not, it’s been with us long enough to establish itself as its own genre with staying power. Unlike rap music, though, it will have matured by then. There will probably even be a cable network dedicated to reality TV reruns (a la Game Show Network).[/li][li]CNN- (100%) Been around too long, mostly recognized by its letters alone. Sony-Time-Wartner-Disney-Coke, a semi-independent subsidiary of Starbucks.
Feel free to add to the list. I’ll add:

**Hillary Clinton

The Amish

The Phelps Clan

Tom Cruise** (think he’ll be a Sean Connery senior stud or a Burt “You were big once…” Reynolds?)

Gay Marriage (as a debate or as an institution)

**Microsoft Windows

Ipods**

Hillary Clinton: I do not think she will be President, but she will probably still be a Senator.

The Amish: They aren’t going nowhere, no time soon!

The Phelps Clan He is barely known now, there is a disproportionate awareness of his clan on the dope than in the general public. I suspect these evil nut jobs will still be around, but within 10 years someone grieving for their love one will at least put him in the hospital.

Tom Cruise (think he’ll be a Sean Connery senior stud or a Burt “You were big once…” Reynolds?) He will be much closer to Burt.

Gay Marriage (as a debate or as an institution) Still a debate, still only legal in some states. I would guess the North East, the Left Coast and a few other states.

Microsoft Windows: They will still have a large market share, I suspect it will be smaller that now though.

Ipods Relics of the past, seemingly slow and pathetic technology as 3 things greater will have surpassed them in 10 years. 10 years is a long time for technology.

Paris Hilton - Dead of an overdose, or born again and big in Christian broadcasting, unknown elsewhere.

STAR TREK - Still around.

Sanjaya - Utterly forgotten.

Rosie O’Donnell - Succesful producer, but not a star in her own right.

Donald Trump - Succesful buisness man, not a media icon.

Harry Potter - Still popular for nostalgia reasons, and likely to be around for some time on that basis. Unlikely to survive original fanbase, though.

Justin Timberlake - Good chance of pulling a Wahlberg and transitioning to genuine actor. Or, utterly forgotten.

Angelina Jolie - America’s favorite MILF.

Reality Television - Still around, largely unchanged.

CNN - Still around, largely unchanged.

Fundamentalist Islam - Still around for sure, wether waxing or waning is hard to say.

Christian Right as a major political influence - Still around, but definitly waning.

Hillary Clinton - Still active in politics, hopefully has abandoned presidential aspirations after two failed runs at the nomination.

The Amish - Unchanged.

The Phelps Clan - Mass suicide.

Tom Cruise - Has been.

Gay Marriage - Legal in several states, but no federal recognition.

Microsoft Windows - Still around, lots more features that nobody wants, uses, or understands.

Ipods - Portable music libraries (probably not using the MP3 format anymore) will be the default method of listening to music, although possibly on a subscription based wi-fi format, instead of just a laptop hard disk with all your music files ripped to it. The Ipod as a corporate brand will probably still be around, but not in as dominate a position in the marketplace.

I’m baffled by the people who think Angelina Jolie won’t be acting anymore in ten years. She may not be a big star, but I’d be amazed if she isn’t still very involved in moviemaking and Hollywood.

Paris Hilton: Doing Broadway but since broadway has gone “all porn, all the time” it is not quite as prestigeous.

STAR TREK (any incarnation): The latest release is Star Trek 87 “The Search for Khan.” The best reviews say that the tribbles make the movie.

Sanjaya: This name comes up on the late night trivia channel, but no one seems to remember what he(?) she(?) it(?) did. The most popular responce is that it was a tea-flavored diet soft drink, but it was recalled because of a too-high sachrin count.

Rosie O’Donnell: Now the richest woman alive and the owner of the most property. This all came about because of the famous “Lawsuit of 2009” which put…

Donald Trump: into receivership. He is now a talk show host on the popular show “Wig out the Wig” where he flips out about almost anything.

Harry Potter: Lost a little of its luster because of the x-rated version of the popular series that came out in late 2014, The general consensus was that the nudity didn’t hurt the show but the BDSM and more kinky aspects really were offensive, although it was acknowledged that Hermonie could really handle a whip. J.K. Rolling’s nervous breakdown is showing signs of ending.

Justin Timberlake: Has trademarked his name and come out with a number of theme parks related to it. Their motto is, “You can have enough fun for the year Just in Timber Lake Park.”

Angelina Jolie: Has taken to touring with different Shakespear plays. The hook is that the cast is only made up of her adopted children. In Romeo and Juliet recently she did a fantastic version of the Nurse.

Reality Television: Since it has been agreed that there has not been any reality since 2015, reality television has fared badly.

CNN: In their attempt to be as mindless as FOX News, they have tried to go 24 hours a day with not one bit of real news. But they have once again been beaten by FOX which cloned Elvis and Anna Nicloe and then mated them, next year, the offspring will be the nightly anchor replacing Bill O’Rilley who despite rumors to the contrary has not been quite as good since his head exploded.

Fundamentalist Islam: Has become more media savy. No longer do we see ugly beared old men, now it is sultry young women with flimsey vails shilling for Islam.

Christian Right as a major political influence: Well, since the integration of the Christian Right with Fundamentalist Islam, it has become much more profitable, but it has attempted to stay away from most politics. It has adopted the motto of “We’ll stay out of your bedroom if you stay out of our boardroom.”

MP3 is going to be around. It is far to entrenched you will need a factor of 5 or 10 decrease in size to dethrone it.

[ul]
[li]Hillary Clinton- She’s a permanent fixture in the political spotlight. She’ll be around for awhile.[/li][li]The Amish- They’ve tenaaciously held onto their values in a modernized world. They’ll still be here for a long time.[/li][li]The Phelps Clan- He’ll eventually piss off the wrong person with not a lot of self-control and will be assassinated.[/li][li]Tom Cruise- Scientology will continue to drag him down. He’ll be a has-been fairly soon.[/li][li]Gay Marriage (as a debate or as an institution)- It will become more prominent and even marginally accepted in politically liberal areas. Conservatives will still shun it and prevent any such proliferation.[/li][li]Microsoft Windows- May come to realize that more isn’t always better, will become more streamlined.[/li][li]Ipods- Like the Sony Walkman, it will become a generic term for any MP3 player or device that doesn’t use a physical storage medium (disc, tape, etc.).[/li][/ul]

Paris Hilton - will be the head of the New Fundamentalist Revival Movement.

Star Trek - a new Saturday Morning cartoon, Star Trek Kids featuring Baby Kirk and Baby Spock will be a runaway hit. (think Muppet Babies)

Sanjaya - will be a celebrity (D list) judge on a new reality show.

Rosie O’Donnell - Sad embittered recluse - “Mommy Dearest” type books being ghostwritten on behalf of her children.

Donald Trump - finally shaves his head and looks normal.

Harry Potter - Required 5th grade reading.

Justin Timberlake - last gig: singing as celebrity guest on the American Idol Finale.

Angelina Jolie: retired from acting. Her tribe (16 adopted children) is happily living in Venuezuela.

Reality Television - There are two “all reality” stations RTV and RTV2. There are rumors that a new station will be up and running this fall.

CNN - After peace was declared in the Middle East and the Christo/Muslim accord was in effect, the station had nothing to report.

Fundamentalist Islam - see above.

Ipods - For those who like the “old school flava” - implants for the rest of us.

Paris Hilton - an extremely rich recluse, forgotten by most

STAR TREK (any incarnation) - Oh yes. There will be a BSG-style re-imagining of the original series in production by 2010

Sanjaya - don’t know them

Rosie O’Donnell - don’t know her

Donald Trump - retired to a golf course with his seventh wife. The Trump will be mourned when he goes

Harry Potter - I’d imagine so, there’s still a few movies to make

Justin Timberlake - an interesting actor, makes the odd album covering classic '90s R’n’B with hip, underground producers

Angelina Jolie - hard to say - the flakiness could go either way. I’ll predict a Brigit Bardot-style path for Angelina

Reality Television - too cheap to make to ever die off

CNN - don’t see why it shouldn’t still be around, maybe web-based

Fundamentalist Islam - Oh yes

Christian Right as a major political influence - Probably

Hillary Clinton - She’ll be a respected senior Senator

The Amish - they’ll be around in a hundred years time

The Phelps Clan - One of the family will snap and take out Fred in a hilariously bloody fashion, then obscurity

Tom Cruise - He’ll be living happily with his husband, and making quirky films for European directors

Gay Marriage (as a debate or as an institution) - Don’t know the US situation

Microsoft Windows - Of course. Their internal development roadmap for the Windows family probably extends to ten years in the future (at least tentatively)

Ipods - Might well be looked back on like we do currently with the Sony Walkman

Paris Hilton - Has been.

STAR TREK (any incarnation) - There’ll be another TV franchise by then.

Sanjaya - I don’t even know who this is.

Rosie O’Donnell - Yep, unless she dies.

Donald Trump - The same.

Harry Potter - Too much money for this to go away.

Justin Timberlake - 50/50 he’ll still be around.

Angelina Jolie - Yep

Reality Television - In some form.

CNN - Probably more relevant.

Fundamentalist Islam - This will be the major cultural bogeyman for years.

Christian Right as a major political influence - Less influence than now, but not without teeth.

Hillary Clinton - still a political force

The Amish - 10 yrs? Yeah. 50? Probably not.

The Phelps Clan - the creep will finally get what’s due him. Without the leader, the group will fade from the public eye

Tom Cruise - will finance his own weird movies

Gay Marriage - both sides of the debate will find some common ground

Microsoft Windows - It will still be called “Windows” but will be substantially different

Ipods - or something like it, smaller even, with tonnes of storage

Hillary Clinton- I would not be surprised if she held at least one term of the Presidency by that time, but it won’t be with my vote!

The Amish- There’ll always be hold-outs but most will probably be similar to those wimpy Mennonites, with just enough differences to stay distinct.

The Phelps Clan- Fred’ll be dead. The sheep will scatter.

Tom Cruise (think he’ll be a Sean Connery senior stud or a Burt “You were big once…” Reynolds?)- BATTLEFIELD EARTH will eventually be given the film treatment it deserves!
Seriously, he’ll still be a decently bankable actor- he has a cute Everyman quality to him that will keep his career going.

Gay Marriage (as a debate or as an institution)- some states will have it; other states will go with civil unions; very few states will have neither; the federal gov’t will recognize both & treat them equally

Microsoft Windows- it’ll live long past Bill Gates

Ipods- made obsolete as GG microcomputers are installed in every child’s brain at birth.
