Who are our current "Abe Vigodas"? (people you might be surprised to learn are still alive)

I mentioned Ernest Evans (aka Chubby Checker) in a previous post. I recently learned that Evans was high school friends with Fabian Forte.

Fabian’s first Top 40 hit was released in 1958. But he’s still alive at 81.

Richard Lester, who directed A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and Superman II* and III, is still alive at age 92.

*re-shot for the most part from Richard Donner’s first round of shooting.

French leading man Alain Delon is still with us at 88.

And he’s still working as one of the Brewers’ radio announcers, though he now only works home games (and not necessarily all of them), and is taking things “one day at a time.”

Rachel Robinson, widow of Jackie Robinson, is still alive at age 101. Jackie Robinson passed away prematurely in 1972 at age 53.

I was looking through the cast list for the movie MASH earlier today and a surprising number of the actors in that movies are still alive, for a movie that was made fifty-four years ago.

Donald Sutherland (88)
Elliott Gould (85)
Tom Skerritt (90)
Robert Duvall (93)
Jo Ann Pflug (83)
John Schuck (84)
Carl Gottlieb (86)
Gary Burghoff (80)
Fred Williamson (86)
Michael Murphy (85)
Bud Cort (76)

Actor Dick Van Dyke is 98 and has just been nominated for a daytime Emmy

My annual themed list is the cast of the MASH movie and TV show. The show has had fairly good success in having cast survive. It premiered 52 years ago and we still have Alan Alda, Loretta Switt, Gary Burghoff, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell. GW Bailey and Jeff Maxwell are also still living. We’ve lost Mclean Stevenson, Larry Linville, Wayne Rogers, and Harry Morgan. Morgan made it to 96, though.

My list is:

Alan Alda

Loretta Swit

Mike Farrell

Jamie Farr

Gary Burghoff

Jeff Maxwell

G.W. Bailey

Donald Sutherland

Elliot Gould

Robert Duvall

Fred Williamson

Tom Skerritt

Mike Altman

Mike Altman is not really an Abe Vigoda type, though. I do not believe he is even 70.

True, just sharing my list. He’s 69, though!

One foot in the grave, then.

Few people realize Liza Minnelli is still with us. Dick VanDyke to a lesser degree.

(MASH movie cast)

Two of those were in Harold and Maude. One is easy for fans of the movie, but can you name the other? Checking the cast list surprised me. Quite a few still alive. (Not counting the ones who only made a handful of movies and may have just disappeared.)

Vivian Pickles who played Harold’s mom is still alive at 92 but she hasn’t done anything per IMDb since 1999. Ellen Geer (daughter of Will) is still alive (age 84) and has a credit from 2020 in Better Things.

Wow, so MASH is like the opposite of [The Conqueror.]!(The Conqueror (1956 film) - Wikipedia)

No, that would be Carnal Knowledge, which I mentioned in an earlier post.

Arthur Frommer, creator of Frommer’s travel guides, is still alive at 94.

Willie Mays turns 93 tomorrow, May 6.

Oldest living hall of fame player or no?

Indeed he is, according to baseball-reference.

Next oldest is Luis Aparicio, who just turned 90. Next is Sandy Koufax, age 88.

Whitey Herzog was the second oldest behind Mays, but he passed away a couple of weeks ago. He was a player, but is in the HOF because of his managerial successes.

Bud Selig is 89; he’s in the HOF, but he was not a player.

The oldest living MLB player just turned 100:
