Who are our current "Abe Vigodas"? (people you might be surprised to learn are still alive)

Dr. Ruth Westheimer is 92 years old and still feisty according to reports. Not bad for a Holocaust survivor.

I’m not convinced of that.

That’s nice but in 1983 he could have still officially been playing Bond. Would have been a fourteen year duration which is where Daniel Craig is now about to come to an end. But he would have been 44 years old in 1983 whereas Craig is 52.

Probably the biggest sliding doors moment in an actor’s career.

Lazenby was also unfortunate that when Bruce Lee offered him the chance to shoot kung fu movies with his production company, Lee passed away shortly afterwards. Lazenby did three movies still with the company that did okay but the genre lost a lot of its gravitas without Lee.

As is Gene Hackman, who seems — older? younger?

And Angela Lansbury, who had jokes made about her being past her prime in 1983’s Pirates of Penzance.

Well, Ruth is only 47 in Penzance - old compared to the maidens and Frederik, but not ancient by modern standards.

George Lazenby was the best Bond until Danial Craig. They both played it as grim, tough, and necessary work, not as a fun lark.

Sean Connery was cool because he was the first Bond, Roger Moore and Remington Steele were beyond awful, Tim Dalton was pretty good.

Well, Sean Connery was the first James Bond if you only count those who play the lead role in theatrically-released movies. However, in 1954, Barry Nelson played the role in an hour-long American TV show. You can get really picky if you want to include Bob Holness for playing the role in a 1956 South African radio play. Or to be even more picky, you could include Bob Simmons for being the person shooting at the camera in the opening to Dr. No.

Connery is the first Bond most people ever saw, back then. I can see his appeal compared to the others. I’m in the minority in thinking Moore was the best Bond, but was too old and never in a good Bond film.

My dad joked that Maggie Smith had been 60 for about 30 years.

It’s true. She looked older than she was when she was in her 30s, but after about 38, only seemed to age one year for every two she lived, and when she was in her 70s, looked really good. She’s closing in on 90 now, and for once, starting to look about the age she actually is, but she still moves really well.

BTW: Vanessa Redgrave is 83 and still kicking.

So we might be able to include Abe’s old co-star Hal Linden in this category.
I thought he had passed away already and was surprised today to see he is still working and had an IMDB credit as recently as last year for Grey’s Anatomy.

“Grey’s Anatomy” is still on?! Maybe we should extrend the thread to talk about shows you might be surprised to learn are still alive.

Apparently it will be back for a 17th season. I haven’t watched a single episode but I remember it being pretty big at one point. ER lasted forever too.

They haven’t run out of body parts yet? They must be down to minor glands by now.
:flees:

I was surprised to hear that jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins is still alive. He’s 90 and doesn’t play any more, but in his life he played with Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and nearly every other jazz artist that anybody ever heard of. He managed to survive his heroin addiction, as well. He won a Grammy in 2001 at age 71.

If Gray’s Anatomy is on the list, so is Supernatural. Still going! (for a few more months!)

The new ECW World Heavyweight Champion, Shane Douglas, famously called fellow wrestler Terry Funk, then a relatively young 49 but still active in wrestling and old for a wrestler, “the man who will never die,” back in 1993. So far, he’s right. Funk is now 76, which, while still young by the standards of a lot of people in this thread, is very old for a former professional wrestler; a lot of them are lucky to hit 60, especially those of Funk’s ilk, with a penchant for throwing caution to the wind.

I always think of Roger Moore as James Bond.

I had to look up Jerry Lawler and was happy to see he is also still alive. He turns 71 in a couple months.
