Who doesn't have these things...

I read with interest the “I don’t watch TV” threads of late and it makes me wonder: Which “modern” electronic toys & gizmos do you NOT own (and why, if you think you need to explain):

  1. television (I mean NO tv, having a broken one or one you don’t use doesn’t count)
  2. stereo (includes boomboxes & Walkman-type portables)
  3. cell phone (I don’t have one, don’t need or want one)
  4. pager (see #3)
  5. Video playback/recording device (DVD, VCR, etc)
  6. video game console
  7. computer accessories such as scanners, digital camers, etc.
  8. your own computer (perhaps you’re using your roommates’?)

I realize that #5 & 6 would be directly related to #1.
I have most of the above, but, then again, I’m a gadget freak.

I do not own a TV. I have access to one as long as I’m living in my parents’ house, but when I lived in my dorm I did not have one. I don’t watch enough TV to miss it. I do own a VCR (a hand-me-down), and so if I come across a cheap or free, functional television set to hook up to it, I might grab it so that I can watch videos once I get my own apartment.

I did not own a cell phone until last December, when I embarked upon an Epic Voyage from New York to Mississippi and my parents decided that a cell phone was a necessity in case my car broke down on the backroads of Alabama.

No pager. Don’t need or want one. I don’t even like carrying the cell phone, and I only remember to take it with me and turn it on if I’m expecting a call or expecting to have to make one. It’s usually off and at home.

I don’t own a stereo but I do own an in-dash radio/CD player for my car. It’s been installed in three different automobiles so far.

No video game console, either, although there is a Super Nintendo that I could probably lay claim to if I decided to.

Only computer accessory I have is a “web-cam” type setup that was a gift given for the express purpose of taking naughty pictures. No scanner (I gave it to Gunslinger so he can show people his photography).

I do have my own computer, though.

[li]2 Tvs (could not do without)[/li][li]2 Vcrs & A dvd player (i tape shows that are on at the same time and i only rent dvd’s they are the best… IMO)[/li][li]My own computer [/li][li]Portable Digital cam (love it, love it, love it.)[/li][li]Would like a cell phone again and enjoy using them.[/li][li]Do not like pagers…[/li][li]2 Stereos (I hardly ever listen to music…)[/li][/ul]

I have all of the gadets listed above.
In addition I have 3 computers and looking to get another one.

What I don’t have is a television station.
WTF?

Yeah, my geeky brother has a television station in his house. He transmits up to the amateur television station on the top of Mt. Dandenong which gets rebroadcast around the Melbourne Metro Area.

444.4 Mghz, below SBS and above ABC, and direct line of sight if you wanna catch it. He (and his geeky mates around Melbourne), put some weird stuff up there, in the air, for the world to see.

VK3RTV if you wanna see some stuff.

I want, need, one of those

T.V., computer, stereo, all check.

No cell phone or pager, and no desire for one. sure, a cell phone would releave a lot of stress when trying to get my friends organized on the weekends, but overall, I view both “modern conveniences” as nothing more than an electronic leash so that i’m always at someone else’s mercy, or a fucking pain in the ass because it seems everyone with a cell phone never bothers to answer the fucking thing even though it’s in their pants (unless they’re out of thier pants, but why would they…ooohhhhhh).

No digital camera, I don’t use my regular one enough as it is (unfortunately) to justify spening money I don’t have on a digital one. No scanner or printer either, although the computer is mine.

I don’t have 2, 5 and 6. Never wanted or needed them either.

The only thing I don’t own is a pager. Why have a pager when I have a cell phone?

I kinda think that pagers are loosing their needfulness especially when there are cell phones that can be used as all of the following:

Pager
Phone
Email
Two-way radio
Text chat
Browser

  1. Don’t own one, but have access to my roommate’s TV
  2. Had one for years, but gave it to my younger brother when I left for college (My computer’s CD drive works fine for me).
  3. My family owns two, but they’re more annoying than useful - my mother always called when I was driving, or freaked out when I forgot to turn it on…
  4. nope
  5. Computer has a DVD drive.
  6. nope
  7. Webcam
  8. yep, a happy cube

Dude, earthquake!

1. television - I have two, one downstairs, one upstairs.

2. stereo - Same as above, three if you count my car stereo.

3. cell phone - Don’t have this one. I have no need for one and would rather that people not be able to contact me everywhere I go. If I traveled more I would get one, though.

4. pager - Same reason as above.

5. Video playback/recording device - VCR, yes. DVD, no.

6. video game console - Don’t have this. I don’t play many games as it is, and if I do, I play them on my PC.

**7. computer accessories such as scanners, digital camers, etc.- ** Got all these.

**8. your own computer- ** Using it right now to post this message.

1-Yes, 2 TVs

8-Yes, my own computer

  1. I own 2 and have 3 functioning in the house and I left one that worked in my old garage when I moved
  2. Home entertainment center
  3. I have 2 but only one is functioning

  1. TV- Yes
  2. Stereo- No working ones in the house (rabbit damage), one in my car.
  3. Cell Phone- Yes. I pay $20 evey 90 days, don’t use it much.
  4. Pager- No, pretty useless.
  5. VCRs-Yes. DVD-Yes (Just got it saturday, $64.99 new)
  6. Game Console- Yes. NES, SNES, N 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, Gameboy Color.
7.Yes, but my scanner is broken and my cam is a POS.
  7. Yes, 4 of them are fully functional but all of them are obsolete. Best is 333 Mhz AMD with 2 hard drives with a total of 8 GB, 64 MB ram. Two p166s and a 33 mhz Mac Performa that seems faster then the p166s.
  1. Got one
  2. Got one
  3. Had to get one (along with a fax) for my weekend job. Didn’t like it at first, but I’ve gotten used to it. I like that it eliminates the need for me to go to the office in person (I haven’t seen my boss in over a year). Mostly, I just leave the ringer off and use it as a portable answering machine. I now find myself starting to eyeball the new models with built-in digital/video cameras and GPS mapping programs. Have these made their way to the US yet?
  4. Hell no. Had to use one for a while in college and hated it. Leave a message.
  5. Yep
  6. Got a Playstation 1, but haven’t used it in a couple of years.
  7. Nope. Probably will at some time, though.
  8. Couldn’t live without it.

I have 'em all except 4 (they irritate me) and 6 (not much of a gamer).
Gotta have the TV, and the VCR gets used even more than my very own computer.
I just got the cell phone last year and am glad to have a corporate discount.
No DVD yet. I have a ton of VHS tapes, though.
Also have: digital camera–I won it in a sweepstakes–and the old scanner isn’t compatible with the new comp’s XP, and I need a better one anyway, so that one is still pending.

No TV.

I’ve got everything else though (well not a console or VCR, but thats because I don’t have a TV). I’m a gadget freak that just happens to hate television.

TV: 4 in the house, use greatly depends on who’s watching it. I personally hardly ever use it except for videos.

Stereo: Usually use it for background music as I sleep (I hate sleeping in a totally quiet room).

Cell phone: Don’t have one, don’t need one, don’t want one. If nothing else, I’m sick of people who seem to think a cell phone is an excuse to hold up traffic or talk loudly in public about their personal lives.

Pager: See cell phone except for the rant on rudeness.

VCR: Got one. Since I mostly watch videos when I watch anything at all, It’s a bit of a nesscity.
DVD: Have one, don’t have it hooked up yet. Don’t like the idea of having to replace all my videos with DVD’s (I’m still wondering if the replacement for DVD’s isn’t right around the corner).

Video game console: Don’t want anything except for a PS1/PS2.

Comp accessories: Nothing except for joystick.

Computer: I need my computer. I live on my computer (yes it’s sad, but I can think of worse things).

1. television - no, I have no TV. Haven’t bothered to buy one, because the fta channels are crap here, and I don’t have enough spare time to justify getting satellite, nor do I particularly crave watching it. I spend more time playing games on my laptop or surfing the web. However I do watch VCDs on my laptop occasionally.

2. stereo - no, no stereo, or radio, or any dedicated sound device. However I have a set of speakers that I use to listen to mp3s on my laptop.

3. cell phone - no, not a personal one, just a company one, (though if I didn’t have one through work I would buy my own)

4. pager - no, because the mobile/SMS is an adequate substitute

5. Video playback/recording device - no, unless you count the CD drive on my laptop, which I use to watch VCDs, and I have disk burner, though I’ve never burnt video files

6. video game console - no, I play all the games I need to play on my laptop

**7. computer accessories such as scanners, digital camers, etc. ** - no, have been meaning to get a digital camera but can’t quite justify the expense yet (don’t need it, just want it!)

8. your own computer - my wonderful ibook! And my horrible work pee cee.

Hmm. Looking at all the above is making me think that replacing my ibook with a tibook really wouldn’t be that frivolous. I do get a hell of a lot of use out of my laptop…

And what a great living advert I am for Apple’s digital-hub-lifestyle thing.

I do not own a computer or any accesories.

I post from work.

I got 'em all, except the pager and game console (I have my PC for that).

Pagers never took off in Australia. I don’t know anyone who has one or has ever had one. Mobile phones, on the other hand, spread like wildfire. (IIRC, there’s almost 7 million mobile phones for 18 million Australians - so discounting the very young and very old populations, that’s pretty close to market saturation). I can only think of two friends my age that don’t have one.

I don’t own a PC or stereo (my son’s PC doesn’t have a scanner or CD burner or any cute peripherals), no mobile phone, no pager, no games console (the last one of those we owned was a Megadrive).

I own a TV and a fairly low-tech VCR.
