It’ll feel like the end of an era, for sure. And yet…
Roy Haynes is still with us, and is five years older than Newk. And Wayne Shorter, who may seem like he belongs to a later generation, is actually only three years younger than Sonny.

Larry Kramer is still alive too - he was diagnosed with HIV in 1988 and had a liver transplant in 2001 (the report of his death by the AP in December of that year was apparently greatly exaggerated :p). He’s 81 now.
Queen Elizabeth II, aged 90. She’s been queen my entire life and I’m 63 now.
I knew Larry back in the 80s when I was in ACT-UP. I considered him old even then.
Paul Coker (age 88) and Al Jaffee (95) still appear regularly in Mad. Mort Drucker and Frank Jacobs (both 87) are also alive, though they seem to have retired.
He did have a very old look for a guy in his mid-50’s(the hair and beard, I think). He looks great, now, though.
Billy Graham has been silent lately. He’s 98. His son started pushing for Trump, though. Sad!
It can be difficult to remember Pope Benedict XVI is alive, too. He quit awhile ago and people figured he was terminally ill or something. I don’t know why he quit, but he had some life left in him, I guess.
My entire life, too, at 52. It is going to be weird when she goes, and I imagine I will be unaccountably upset about it.
In college me and my roommates got tickets to see him. We figured he was an icon and we should see him play at least once before he died.
That was 30 years ago.
Wow, I didn’t realize Shorter was such an OLD fart. He really didn’t come into his own until the early 1960s, while Rollins was already a star in the late '40s.
I hope Roy Haynes lives forever, god love him, but he’s not the jazz MONSTER that Rollins is. Sonny is regularly placed in the top ten soloists of ALL TIME, along with the likes of Armstrong and Hawkins and Young and Parker.
Betty White
Olivia de Havilland
Jean Rouverol
Danielle Darrieux
Re-watched Some Like It Hot Tonight on TCM and noticed that character actor Nehemiah Persoff played the main mob boss Little Bonaparte. I’m sure you’ve seen him, even if you don’t recognize his name, check out his IMDB page, the guy’s been in hundreds of TV shows from the mid 50’s thru the late 90’s. I was surprised to see that he’s still alive at 97 years old.
Nanette Fabray, who played mother to the deceased MTM, and also to the deceased Bonnie Franklin, is still alive at 96.
Ed Asner is hanging in at 87.
The two living Dionne Quints are 82, remarkable since they are genetically identical to three people who are already dead, and one died at 20, while another died at 54. The other died at 67.
Charles Manson is 82. If you count juvie homes as “incarceration,” he only spent about 12 years of his life unincarcerated.
Mackenzie Phillips has shockingly made it to age 57, and is laying claim to 7 years of sobriety, her longest stretch ever by twice.
Gavin MacLeod is 85; Chloris Leachman is 90 and still working.
Angela Lansbury is 91. Her first role was in Gaslight in 1944 with Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, Joseph Cotten, and Dame May Whitty.
Emilie died at age 20 from a seizure disorder that was untreatable at the time, and Marie’s death was actually at age 36, from a blood clot that may have been a complication of alcoholism. Yvonne, who lived in a convent for most of her adult life, succumbed to cancer.
Cecile’s life is in shambles now because one of her children absconded with settlement money and she has not been able to locate him.
Billy Graham’s disappearance from the public eye is due to Parkinson’s. I’m also surprised he’s still alive.
Henry Kissinger is still alive at 93.
Rose Marie, Sally Rogers on The Dick Van Dyke Show, is still alive at 94. Show creator Carl Reiner turns 95 next month. And Dick himself turned 91 last December.
AKA “Baby” Rose Marie. She’s also still a young 93.
And will be appearing on Broadwayagain soon!
Conrad Janis, jazz musician and Mindy’s dad on Mork and Mindy, hanging in there at 89.
Magic Johnson
He is just 57 years old.
Back in 1991 when he announced he was HIV+, would anyone think he was going to live 25+ years, He is not only alive but he was just announced as the Lakers General Manager (or equivalent).
How long was a HIV+ person supposed to live back in 1991?
John McCain is as old as dirt, but not as old as his mother Roberta, who is 105.
John Paul Stevens retired from the Supreme Court in 2010 but is still alive at 96.
The last king of Romania, Michael I, is still alive at 95.
I’m not surprised they’re still alive, but G.H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter are both 92. They both have a chance of overtaking Ford, who died at 93, as the oldest ex-president ever.
