Us in south-east Michigan, maybe. It just started snowing here about an hour ago and the half-melted snow around my house is getting covered with a glittery, fresh new layer.
I don’t know where the whole mystique of a white Christmas started (especially since Baby Jesus was supposedly born in Bethlehem, which gets about as much snow as Los Angeles) but I do like me a snowy Christmas.
According to the news, half of Britain is underwater, no snowflakes in sight. Here in London, it’s way too warm for Christmas. At least too warm for this Canadian. And wet.
It won’t be a white Christmas where I am (northern Indiana). Most of our snow seems to come in January and February.
As for the White Christmas image and its origins, it seems that it has to do with the fact that the 19th century, when classic Christmas lore such as “A Christmas Carol” and “The Night Before Christmas” were published, had colder, snowier winters than nowadays. At least, that’s what this article suggests:
3 to 4 inches are predicted for Northern Arkansas Christmas evening. 1 to 3 inches in the Little Rock area. As usual we’re right on the boundary. If the front pushes south a little then we’ll get the heavier snow. If it goes north we may only get a dusting of snow.
Won’t last long. The ground is too warm. It was 60 degrees today. Shirtsleeve weather. Whatever snow comes down will melt by Wed.
We had a lovely little bit of snow this afternoon–just enough to make the trees look pretty but not enough to require shoveling off the sidewalks. Sadly, it has since turned into sleety rain and will probably be nothing but ice by tomorrow morning.
Southeast Pennsylvania (and, if my FB is any indication, in a wide swath tracking northwest) got snow today, but it’s very heavy and wet, which means that all it’ll take is a couple of degree warmup and it’s all going to be gone by noon tomorrow.
