I’ll give you an example: Our 1996 and 97 teams could have been…
PG: McInnis
SG: Carter
SF: Stackhouse
PF: Jamison
C: Wallace
…had Stack and Sheed and Touche decided to stay. How freaking amazing would those teams have been? You’re bitching about GOOD players leaving dook; I’m bitching about GREAT players bolting UNC.
Regarding your second paragraph: I agree with you.
And mullinator, while I also think John Wooden is the greatest coach ever, but one must always remember two words when evaluating the Wizard: SAM GILBERT.
Well, well, well, look who made it to the Final Four. Good Times. Who’s going to stop us now? Once Duke wins the tourney which in turn will allow to win all 3 of my pools, including the Straight Dope one, hearing all the trash being talked will be worth it. Bring it on UConn…
Seriously, congratulations to Romain Sato. Watching you in the tournament has been an absolute joy and I can’t wait for you to make in the NBA. Your story is one of the reason that makes me a college basketball fan.
And to Georgia Tech, man if you guys still had Chris Bosh, you’d be scary. But then my Raptors would have nothing going for them.
Ah… I sit here, looking warmly at my degree from the University of Connecticut, thinking back to my time on the campus. Oh the sweet memories of Storrs, and the ConnDome. Unfortunately, I was gone for the 1999 Championship, when we upset poor pitiful Duke. What a tearjerker.
I am still away from Storrs, but tonight feels just as sweet. You know, I almost feel sorry for Duke.
An eight point lead with three minutes to go BLOWN!!! Well, maybe the women will do better against UCONN tomorrow. Oh, wait. That’s right–they choked against Minnesota and didn’t even get to the Final Four…
And the officials only had to throw out half the Duke team (including all THREE of their centers) to give UConn a chance.
I’m no Duke fan, but there were some terrible calls. And then, when Duke desperately needed a call, and their player got absolutely mugged… silence.
Oh well. I guess it’s payback for all the times Duke has been on the other side of the officiating game (which seems to often be more important than the basketball game).
Well you know the hallmark of being a great coach is being able to get your team ready for the big games, Coach K had his team ready when they went down by 11 in the first 3 minutes…okay bad example. But a great coach makes sure his team plays well at crunch time… oh they gave up an eight point lead in a few minutes at the end you say…
Hehe, Fuck Puke University and fuck coach K.
Yeah, right. Uh huh - it was such unfair, lopsided officiating! Of course, Okafor played only half the game because it was his choice.
There was plenty of mugging both ways that did not get called, as well as plenty of ticky tack that did. In that sense, it was one of the oddest officiating efforts I’ve seen, but I don’t think you can whine about it either way.
I said it waaaaaaay back in the beginning of the thread and I’ll say it again . . .
Georgia Freakin Tech!
We’ve been overlooked and under-appreciated all year. Monday night UConn will have a war on their hands. I hope the Huskies know what they are about to face . . . well actually thats a lie. I really hope they have no idea. Just like Kansas and Ok State.
I am saddened to see folks like you, AZCowboy and spoke-, folks who so often make such wise and valuable contributions to the discussions I enjoy on these boards, coming down on the wrong side on this one.
Tis a sad day indeed. But tomorrow will be better!
