Why are sports recap announcers' voices so loud and shrill?

Announcers doing sports recaps talk too damn loudly! I wish they were a little less intense; who’s with me?

IMHO, this is the result of sports culture in which you can be criticized for being too bland and calm but rarely is anyone criticized for being too hyper or energetic.

What bothers me is more people trying to fill in space by saying unnecessary or needless things - a silence gap is just fine to me - but I’m with you, the voices are too shrill, especially some female announcers. And then there is their tendency to hype everything up as the greatest ever, or make hay of some obscure stat (“This is the first Belgian-American from Michigan to win the 200-meter since 1976!”)

Totally agree, @Velocity. As someone who had the opportunity to listen to really excellent sports broadcasting (Chick Hearn, BobMiller and especiallly Vin Scully), I am admittedly hard to please, but somehow shouting (often shrill as noted) has replaced content and mostly I turn down the sound. I do turn on the closed captions sometimes but that is mostly for laughs.

It’s the ESPN effect, wherein announcers view themselves as entertainers deserving of attention.

I don’t see any gender differences. The male shouters are more annoying, maybe because there are more of them.

People trying to fill in space by saying unnecessary or needless things [in particular, obvious things] constitutes about 95% of sports broadcasting.
