Okay, so you fancy yourself an artiste? A creative gadlfy, flitting from one musical arena to the next, spinning a golden web of taut lyrics and inventive prose?
Then learn, my museful friend. Learn from the tragedy of yesterday, learn from the bludgeon of humanity that is Mr. Rose’s fan base. Learn…
I hear he’s going to re-write the lyrics from ‘Paradise City’ to now read,
What’s that quote I’m thinking of?
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it?
Ya know, for someone who is kind of talented (note, I didn’t say he was the best), you think Axl would get his head out of his butt and just play some friggin’ concerts. I know the article said travel problems, but wouldn’t one attempt to get to a show so far away a little in advance?
I read some where that Axl Rose is an anagram. It was a long time ago, so I have no cite. Does anyone know what it could form? I always have trouble thinking up words with an ‘x’ in them…
Yeah, it must be real hard to get a second chance in Music and have fans want to see you in concert and buy your CD’s (I don’t know why anyone would) and go from town to town filling arena’s and decide to not show up for the gig.
He has the easiest job in the world, He’s a Fucking Tool.
Intaglio, I think you might be showing a wee tad bit of intolerance here. It has nothing to do with rock star attitude and everything to do with obeying FAA instructions.
His plane was delayed because of weather conditions. Skerri, I don’t remember if it specified if he was coming from another gig or not. ( With or without his band ). As is frequently the case, once you get on the road you are a slave to EXTREMELY narrow time windows. Bands criss cross the USA all the time and it’s amazing that more gigs are’t cancelled. You wanna fly out of Hartsfield in Atlanta to get to Galveston for a gig, but it’s August and the storming is vicious. You get out the next morning, but the gig was the night before. Rock star attitude or just the way life is?
And does this mean that the other people on his place suffer from a digusting case of Accountant Attitude, Sales Rep Attitude, Returning From Burying Your Mom’s Body Attitude and Going To See Your Sister Attitude?
I drove out from Astoria NY to the Meadowlands a bunch of years ago to see Elton John. As I got closer, something looked really wrong. It was like 90 minutes before showtime ( an eeeeeexxxxllent time to get to a large arena gig, IMHO ) and the parking lots were empty. I work my way closer, and see a flashing sign. ’ Concert Tonight Cancelled, Tune In To KROK For Details’. Elton had a stomache virus and was down for the count.
I gave the ticket away to someone else because I couldn’t go on the reschedule night. Did I think he was being an obnoxious diva? No…he got sick. Axl’s plane ( or, as I’m now tempted to refer to him as, ’ Oral’s plane ) was grounded. Simple as that.
I find it astonishing that posters are slamming Axl while ignoring the fact that the people at the concert incited a FUCKING RIOT (pardon my language mods) which ended up with police intervention. But I guess y’all think that the concertgoers were entitiled to riot, right?
I don’t think there’s ever a justification for a riot at a freaking rock show. You’re there to see music being performed by an artist whom you must like, since you pay anywhere between $20-$80 a ticket for a concert these days. Why in the world would anyone start a fight that would erupt into pandemonium, causing the show (if it even starts) to come to a complete halt?
Here is another article that in the 5th paragraph down relates another riot in 1991.
I’m not saying Axl is an ass because he didn’t get there on time. I just think that if this is your first major tour in over 10 years, you’ve made a point of saying “hey, Vancouver is our first stop” and you have a history of riots at your shows, you’d better have some good travel arrangements. I mean, come on. Who was the shmoe who didn’t schedule him to be there early? It’s the first freaking show in 10 years, and he couldn’t get there the day before? Maybe schedule all his last minute promotional stuff two days before? I mean, come on. I know Axl is a “rock star” and all, but I don’t think he’s so busy that he can’t prepare for a show in time.
For the record, I dig Guns ‘N’ Roses. I saw them in August '92, on tour with Metallica and Faith No More. It was probably one of the better stadium shows I’ve ever seen. I just think that the opening day of their new tour should have been handled a heck of a lot better than it was.
Of course the riot wasn’t justified, but when a band consistently incites riots, I tend to think it reflects poorly on the band as well as its fan base. The fact that this time may not have been Axl’s fault is almost beside the point. It’ll be very hard to accept his excuse as legitimate when he’s been such an asshole in the past. Perhaps Axl is familiar with “The Boy Who Cried Wolf?”
I can only hope Buckethead will stop associating with such trash.
Actually, IIRC. Axl got his name because one of his friends ask him how to spell Axle and he responded with “AXL, you a**” or something along those lines. I think I read that in a Rolling Stone article. I tried googling on it but my google skills are lacking apparently.
August 9 1992 - Metallica and GNR tour in Montreal
At Montreal’s Olympic Stadiam in Canada James is rushed to the hospital due to faulty pyrotechnical equipment. James Hetfield suffered first and second degree burn on his hands, arm and face. Axl Rose uses this as an excuse to shorten his part of the gig and provokes an uncontrollable outbreak amongst the audience. Rioting resulted in 13 people wounded and 400,000 dollars in damage.
