I was watching Enterprise last night, and a thought hit me. Not hard and there were no injuries reported, so I thought I’d pass it on to you…
Why the heck am I watching Enterprise?
Now the first thing I thought was: Well, it’s a pretty good show.
Then I sorta leaned toward: It’s a Star Trek show. You gotta watch Star Trek. What else is there with spaceships and aliens and phaser fights on network TV?(There’s Firefly (that FOX hates, bad stupid FOX) and there’s Andromeda, and there’s… nope that’s about it.)
So what keeps you coming back to Archer and Co. every week? (And don’t tell me it’s Hoshi’s boobie shots or T’Pol’s lips.)
-Rue. (the curious)
I love the show, although frankly I avoid science-fiction shows that aren’t Trek. But, I was pretty lukewarm about DS9, so I don’t give a free pass to every show with a Starfleet insignia.
I like ENTERPRISE because more than any other Trek show, it is first and foremost about making hard decisions. On its own merits, it’s a really good show an I’d probably watch it even if it weren’t a Trek franchise.
Actually, that’s not really true. I watch it because I like the idea of space travel, and because there are nifty explosions and zooming around in spaceships at really high speeds. Also, it’s pretty cool that they’re backtracking a bit to show how things went from our universe to the Star Trek universe.
Having been raised on a steady diet of Star Trek from the very cradle, I also feel an obligation to stay abreast (heehee) of the franchise. It’s somewhat a matter of nostalgia for me.
And it’s cute and cuddly to think that in a couple hundred years, all earthly ills (poverty, starvation, etc., etc., etc.) will have been wiped out.
I start watching because it’s Trek, so I figure I’ll give it a chance. Other Trek shows have had their ups and downs. I’ll admit when I first saw the rumored cast of characters (before the show ever started) on rumor sites, I was a little iffy over the concept.
But, I figured I had to give it a try, especially since they cast Scott Bakula in the lead role (and I loved Quantum Leap).
I have some peeves about some of the technology things they try to bring into it too early, but overall, it’s been pretty good.
I don’t watch it anymore. I love the idea that this was “Enterprise’s” maiden voyage and I loved watching that unbelievably hot vulcan chick slink around in that skin tight space get-up but the acting was soooooooooo bad I just couldn’t hack it.
I follow it mostly because it’s the closest to the original series in tone of them all. For some reason it also feels more morally ambiguous than the other series to me, and that’s also a plus. I lost count of the number of times I wanted to go on a bitch-slapping watching Next Gen…those people were seriously smug looking…
On the other hand, if it suddenly went off the air, I probably wouldn’t miss it too much. I mean, hey, it’s Trek. Seen one, seen them all.
I’m enjoying the heck out of it. It’s not Buffy, it’s not B5, but I still think it’s better than the vast majority of TNG. Of course, I saw most of the craptacular epsiodes of that.
And it’s not as passive-aggressive, thank goodness.
My husband persuaded me to sit thru the first episode. There was nothing about it that I liked, but then, I don’t much like any of the Trek shows. Then there’s the theme music - did they stick with the one they started with?
So, my answer would be - I don’t watch it. Does that skew your results?
I started watching because it’s Trek, but that didn’t keep me watching Voyager past the first 1.5 seasons, so it can’t be the only reason. It’s ok… it’s better than voyager, and my fiancee likes it. It’s got potential, and I want to see if it lives up to it. But I know it will never be another DS9 or TNG or TOS or B5.
I’m having trouble coming up with a reason that I’m still watching it. I liked the first season. But this season has really been terrible. I like the characters and the actors. I think there is a lot of bad acting on the show, but even so the actors have personality and presence on screen. The writing has just been horrendous lately. Plots that are lame, boring, ridiculous, and cliche. Inane dialogue.
The only episode I’ve really liked this season was Carbon Creek.
Oh, yeah, I just remembered why I’m still watching…
I’d say it’s somewhat better than fair, but otherwise I agree with carnivorousplant. I probably would not be watching it so religiously if it were not Star Trek.
For some reason I like it. I don’t know why, because there’s a lot to not like, but eh, whatever.
That translator woman isn’t going to have much of a job as the show progresses, and as it is she’s a bit of a third wheel most of the time. And I do not understand why all the women have to wear all the skin tight clothes and have enormous boobs sticking out like that.
I want to know why they fired they fired the first season writers and where did the pick up the second season losers…
The second season has really, really, really sucked. I mean sucked even more than TNG, DS9 or that other crappy Star Trek series. When TNG first came out long ago, I watched the first episode and it sucked so bad I didn’t watch another episode for 3 years! By then it had become ‘kinda ok’. You turned on Babylon 5 and it really showed TNG was all glitz and no substance.
When people find out I don’t watch Star Trek, they get real puzzled. I am the perfect candidate to watch Star Trek.
The problem with Star Trek is that IT SUCKS!!! Way too much effort on character development. In TNG, you have, what, 7 years of character development. CANNOT SOMETHING PLOT-LIKE HAPPEN? It doesn’t matter what order you watch them in because nothing happens! The only time something non-character interesting happens is the season finally and then they ‘repair the damage’ in the first episode of the next season.
Then comes first season of Enterprise. It wasn’t great. It had problems. They bring in transporters (WTH???) and other items way too soon.
BUT IT DIDN’T SUCK. Episode order mattered because their was a plot! It was actually ok. I watched it every week.
I then watch second season and crap after crap after carp after crap. So I stopped.
Let me know if it gets better again and I will give it another chance.
