The “Republicans” did not put Reagan or Arnie into office. Arnie had to avoid the Republican primary to get elected, and would not necessarily have won it if he had gone in the normal way. Reagan was noted for pulling Democratic and swing voters when he was running.
No Republican can win in California without help from the Democrats – except at the local level.

One thing about Americans that I think really bugs foreigeners is our willingness to put those with no political experience into political office. Without debating the merits of Arnie or Jesse Ventura, I don’t think it’s a bad thing – necessarily.
Celebrities, I think, have this weird desire to speak their minds on many subjects as if it were a requirement of the job. Politics is a hot poker in the eye if you’re a celeb. Don’t talk about it, DO about it instead. If an actor/actress has an objection to this or that, then words only make them look like a hot air balloon deflating. Doing something about it is the key to not being critized or labeled a hypocrite.
Whether Alec said he’d leave or not doesn’t concern me. He needs to do something about the situation/problem he doesn’t like. Get active…
