Win95 and IE5 here. Mine was doing that, I think (it’s hard to keep track of all these gonzo “Illegal Operation” error messages), and IIRC, I fixed it, sort of, by “repairing IE5”. In the Control Panel, under Add/Remove Programs, there’s IE5 not under “I” for “Internet” but under “M” for "Microsoft Internet Explorer. Double-click on it, and it brings up a box that has 3 options: Add a component, Repair Internet Explorer, and Uninstall Internet Explorer and its components. Be careful–Uninstall is the default.
Click on Repair and see what happens. It takes about 5 minutes. It may fix whatever it was. OTOH, it may finish its procedure and tell you smugly, “Internet Explorer could not be repaired” and it will then tell you exactly what it couldn’t fix, like you know what that means. If it tells you that, your next best bet is to Uninstall and then Reinstall it. Uninstalling it means that you may lose your Favorites folder, I’m not sure about that. Copy it to a disk first. Also your e-mail address book may disappear.
You have my complete sympathies–[Manny, can I say “bitch” in GQ? Thank you.]
