The Japorn I’ve seen usually shows a woman who seems like she’d really rather not be having sex. Unlike America porn with ready-and-eager women, in Japanese porn women are completely passive, almost to the point where it seems like the sex is often non-consentual. That really high-pitched squeaking, too … what’s up with that? Do Asian women really sound like that in bed?
If you’re looking for something that doesn’t follow the usual formula of fellatio - cunnilingus - gdiggie style - girl on top - missionary - money shot, you might have to hunt down some fetish films. However, in such films it’s not so much the sex that’s important as the fetish.

You think porn is formulaic cos you don’t go looking for anything else. Sure, there’s lots of crap around, but the same could be said for any media - movies, books, websites, TV shows, whatever.
There are plenty of porn producers around who make stuff that is technically excellent, as well as creatively brilliant. And like in any media, you have to go looking for the good stuff - they don’t spam you!
There are small guys out there busting their arses to make the best stuff they possibly can, and they are slowly gaining recognition, but they need your help. They cannot afford the marketing budget of Hustler or whatever, so they rely on grass roots level of getting the word out.
So, go looking for sites that review adult content if you’re serious about this and not just trolling. The only non-commercail one I can mention here is RAME (rec.arts.moveis.erotica), but from there you can get linking to others.
Porn is so formulatic because “it sells.” Porn is like any other industry. If it sells they remake it untill it stops then they get creative. Think about it. Remember “Friends…” Remember how many rip offs we had of that show…Wait a minute “Friends” was a rip off of “Seinfeld.”
“King Of Queens.” Fat guy loves hot babe. Now we have a show on ABC with Jim Belushi. Same theme and another CBS show which is on 7:30pm (Central) same thing Fat Guy loves Jamie Gertz (whatever the name of that show is)

I recently crafted a list of my likes and dislikes in Asian and American porn, and you’ve hit upon my main dislike in Japanese porn. The women yelp and yip like small dogs. If you watched it blindfolded you’d think a toy poodle was getting reamed. It’s one of the reasons I think all two-person het porn should come with three audio tracks: Him Only, Her Only, and None.
I can only speak for myself when I say that not all Asian women sound like that in bed. I do know that if I was a guy and my partner sounded like that, I’d be sorely tempted to go masturbate instead.

I take it that you’re unfamiliar with Dogfart or Max Hardcore. I can’t give you links here, as the sites ain’t exactly worksafe and the mods/admins would likely bust me anyhow. But the producers I’ve mentioned are creative and bring a lot to the genre.

So … why is it that women in Japanese porn yelp like that?
Sure, a lot of more, shall we say, mainstream hardcore porn is very formulaic involving MF sex, FF sex, MMF sex, MFF sex, and a few different positions thrown into these routines, but there is also a wide world of niche porn that is far from formulaic. You go to some of the few remaining porno stores around Times Square and you’ll see offerings that focus on feet, vomit, midgets, urine, enemas, pregnancy & lactation, bisexuality, elderly sex, bondage, incest, rape, etc. You might even find a few dog-on-women films if you are in a real sleazy joint. There is some pretty un-formulaic stuff out there, it’s just that most of it is too perverted for even those perverts who enjoy porn. Most people’s tastes run towards the fomulaic so that’s what is most widespread. If you don’t want porn that sticks to the fomula, be careful what you ask for, because it’s likely that someone has done it and put it on video.
I really hope the market swings back into “real” movies containing porn rather than porn containing a little bit of a movie (and story). My GF really likes “Dreamquest”. It’s a strandard hardcore porn but actually contains a movie and some plot! Other “normal” porn doesn’t do it for her and so I’ve been looking for better porn movies.
I believe as women get into the whole porn business things will start to change back into movies with porn in them. Most of the porn out there is directed towards men (and hell, I like them) but my GF doesn’t see anything arousing by watching 5 guys on a girl or porn containing several “money shots”.
I bought “Family Busniess” on DVD recently and we were watching it. It’s pretty interesting watching porn being made. The girls, although having a healthy sexual appetite, really do treat it as a job and get paid VERY well.

It’s a collection of stag films made between 1905 and 1930, and has been described in this thread, the striking thing about them is how little the genre has changed in the last century.
The documentary itself kind of sucks in terms of its structure and intent (see my review for details), but the films themselves are well worth seeing for anyone who has an interest in human sexuality over the years.
I have no idea. Maybe they just do, maybe that’s how they like porn stars to sound there, or maybe Japanese women have on average higher voices than their American counterparts. I can only make WAGs.
About the Japanese yelping - I do know that the Japanese tend to be youth-obsessed. I read somewhere that some women in their 20s & 30s will go so far as to talk with a childish voice in order to seem younger (sorry, no cite handy). Considering the fact that a large percentage of the actresses in Japanese porn start out scenes dressed in sailor suits (Japanese school uniforms), perhaps the high-pitched yelping is an affectation meant to give the impression that the actress is a teenage high-school student.

On the high-pitched yelping: I think part of it is a language thing. You’ll notice if you watch enough porn that, often, the nationality (not ethnicity) of the porn stars seems to dictate what guttural noises or sounds they make during the act. Asian actresses from Asian countries tend to make certain sounds (sometimes the high-pitched yelping described in this thread), Latina actresses from Latin American countries tend to make a certain sounds (ex “aye, aye, aye”), actresses from America/Canada make certain sounds (“ugh, ugh, ugh”, “yes, yes, yes”). It certainly doesn’t seem to be an ethnicity thing–Asian-Americans who actually grew up in America (as seems to be AudreyK’s situation) tend to sound like white Americans.
I imagine culture has a lot to do with it too, as has been mentioned in this thread. BTW, I would urge those who think American porn viewers to be morally superior to Japanese porn viewers, to search for something like “illegal” or “underage” or “young” on Kazaa and see just how many American girls try to pass off as high school students (or younger)–or actually are!

Actually, there is one place where had-core porn and plots are commonplace and work together quite well – Japanese adult anime. I’ve watched and reviewed a number of adult anime, and they combine hardcore sexual imagery with very strong plotlines. Frex, “Wordsworth” is an adventure epic spanning 20 years that includes quite graphic sex scenes. “Bizarre Cage” is about sabotage at a Disneylandesque amusement park in which beautiful young female employees are kidnapped periodically by the bad guy and explicitly molested by him. “Fencer of Minerva” is an old-fashioned bodice-ripping romance that includes explicit sex scenes.
There are also anime like “Cool Devices” that have stylistic features or strong psychological elements that make them worthwhile, even if their plots aren’t so strong.
And there are some adult anime that are just excuses to get to the sex scenes – but they’re in the minority, unlike American porn.
Speaking of American porn, Wicked and Vivid occasionally produce porn with strong plot elements (for porn, anyway). I remember one about pirates where they ACTUALLY RENTED AN OLD-TIMEY SAILING SHIP for the movie – there were horses and swordfights and extras and EVERYTHING. It was amazing, considering most porn can’t afford much more than a cheap hotel room, an actress and a videocam.
Or to see how many permutations on the concept of tentacles we can come up with But point well taken. There are also enjoyable light comedies like the semi-softcore Buttobi CPU, which is more fun if you’re into computer-geek in-jokes.
