Seriously. Wasn’t there a damn near instantaneous pitting of the RR when they said 9-11, Katrina and, I think, overdue library books, were all due to teh gay?
Dayum, wring. Isn’t this form of pre-emptive “why aren’t you oh-so-hypocritical libs expressing outrage about ___ (fill in the blank with some lefty person / scandal) the same way you freak out about ___ (substitute right-wing celeb/personality / scandal du jour)??” post the standard operating procedure of folks like Starving Artist and Shodan? Never thought I’d read it from you.
The answers are usually the same: a) we either didn’t hear about it or b) the similarity in circumstances is nebulous at best. In my case, this seems like an a) situation. Who pays attention to Sharon Stone? Now that I have heard about it, it’s a pretty fucking ridiculous and offensive thing to say. I don’t even think karma works that way in any event, not that it matters, because it’s still outrageous and dumb. Do you expect any better from Sharon Stone? Girlfriend is crazy and stupid, so naturally she says crazy and stupid things.
And unlike Falwell/Robertson, Stone isn’t considered a leader/spokesperson for anything, much less a religious subset or major group of people.
Well, I knew you’d want to post something, so I thought I’d let you do the honors as I figured it would mean so much more to you than it does to me.
The difference is, influence. The Christian Right influences elections, Sharon Stone does not.
Besides I didn’t even know she did that until now. I’ve been reading Chinese hillbilly conspiracy theory and was under the impression that it was the Western Earthquake machines.
Last time I checked, Sharon Stone had zilchola real pull in the Democratic party–both its inner power circles or any of its important base demographics.
I’m glad she was able to recently spearhead a highly successful AIDS fundraiser (something like $10M), but even for someone who has a history of saying really stupid things, this one does take the cake.
She’s is a complete idiot and what she said is stupid and heartless. However, unlike Falwell I doubt she has thousands of followers that care about what she says and supports the candidates that she recommends.
No matter how little, you or I think of Falwell he is an actual force in politics. Sharon Stone is barely more than a farce even in Hollywood.
I wasn’t aware she said it in the first place, am I excused? If anybody ever took Sharon Stone seriously, I think they stopped after her visit to Israel a few years ago. (I don’t remember her saying anything offensive, but she sounded like a nimrod and I remember The Daily Show went to town with it.) Hence, little outrage about this.
When millions of people look up to Sharon and let her opinions shape their political outlook, then I will pit her. Until then, I’ll just shake my head and roll my eyes at her stupidity.
Yea, I get that she’s doesn’t have a following like the RR. But not only is this an insanely stupid statement, it’s also inhumane - the level of destruction and human suffering and she uses it to make political commentary?
and, actually, about the ‘following’ sort of thing, don’t I recall threads about Alec “why hasn’t he moved to Canada” Baldwin et al?
Would seem to me that this sort of insanely stupid egregiously wrong statement would be right up the alley for SDMB. Huh. go figure.
Listen, she’ll get no defense from me. It’s a terrible thing to say and it’s a moronic statement made by a moron. I’m just saying I can understand why there hasn’t been much of a reaction here.
I’m among the billions who hadn’t heard that Sharon Stone had said anything about the recent disaster in China until now. It doesn’t particularly surprise me. She’s said stupid things in the past. I’m not sure exactly why I’m required to pit her but I’m willing to do my part.
