Why so little amateur lesbian porn?

I wasn’t sure whether to put this in GQ or CS, so one of the mods is more than welcome to move it if it’s in the wrong forum.

Anyhoo, I like my porn. That’s not exactly a secret to anyone who knows me, but lately I’ve been noting that commercial porn (ie, the stuff you buy from your local adult shop) seems a bit… lacking. Sure, there’s plenty of “Standard” porn (mainly Gonzo stuff of the “Please Fuck My Wife” or “Horny Teen Sluts Vol. 9” variety), which is all well and good, but gets a bit boring after a while.

Even the “All Girl” selection (a personal favourite of mine ;)) seems rather fake and… uninspired.

Of course, as we all know, there’s a veritable Pornocopia out there on the internet, with quite a large chunk of it being made up of people filming themselves engaged in various sex acts.

By far and away the majority of these involve either a M/F couple or an orgy of some kind, usually some bisexual interaction between the women.

However, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a genuine, amateur, not-filmed-for-a-website porno featuring two women. (There’s plenty of semi-commercial or Pro-Am All Girl porn on the web, though!)

Or, to put it a little more bluntly: It seems there are plenty of women who are prepared to let themselves be filmed by or with their boyfriend, but almost no lesbian (or bisexual female) couples doing the same (or, if there are, they’re making sure the footage doesn’t end up on the internet).

The question of course, (yes, there was one in there!) is this: Why is it that there’s so little all-female genuine amateur porn, compared to amateur male/female or group sex porn?

Answers on the back of a postcard…

Have you seen most real lesbians? Not to disparage anyone or stereotype, but those ladies aren’t all that attractive. They may indeed film themselves, but I doubt anyone would want to buy it.

Well, in heterosexual couples, is it typically the male or female partner which drives the desire to photograph, videotape, or distribute copies thereof of their sex acts?

Put two females together, and what do you get? Not a lot of independently distributed lesbian pornography.

Trying to avoid a mod-smacking here: Imagine there was a porn version of youtube. Like with the word “porno” instead of the word “you.” I might imagine there might be something like what you were looking for there.

Oh, yes, because we know that being heterosexual makes a person more physically attractive. Really, your statement is just offensive.

There is lesbian produced porn. This was a topic of much discussion in the mid-80’s. However, it’s not marketed to a general audience.

Time to pull out sex stereotypes again:
The way to a woman’s libido does NOT go through her eyeballs!
The circuit that causes visual arousal is supposedly as male as male gets.

Pr0n, for the most part, is made for not just male tastes, but stereotypically male tastes. In the case of “lesbian” action, this involves very girly-girl girls, frequently with much fussy clothing and shoes, and of course heavy emphasis on artificial peeners.

I’d be turned on like mad by two short-haired, makeup-free gals in a big bed with nothing on but the camera, but that dog don’t seem to hunt.

I would imagine for the same reason there’s not much amateur male/male porn; there are just less gay people.

I’m pretty busy, but I could make time to help investigate this …

I’ve a good friend, a mental health professional who’s also a lesbian. She’s talked with me frankly about what has worked for her and her significant others in the past. And she’s told me quite matter-of-factly that she and her partners have tended to always enjoy good visual porn, lesbian or other, IF the films weren’t contrived or demeaning, and if they were already in the mood. She enjoyed seeing some amateur productions where it was obvious the women weren’t all that experienced with other women, but were giving it a try, for some reason.

Oh, and she didn’t particularly like “lipstick lesbians” either, those films with professional porn starlets paid to perform with each other.

She also related that she and her lovers have had tremendous fun in the past with digital and video cameras, both posing for, and watching later. But they tended to keep these films quite private.

Much is made about the differences between male and female sexuality. But I think the similarities far, far outweigh the differences.

Score!

Unless Ron Jeremy or Jenna Jameson show up, I don’t know if anyone would be able to provide a true factual answer to your question. But is there a huge market for girl-on-girl action? Let me rephrase that stupid question: Compared to boy-on-girl or orgy type pornos, where is the biggest market in sales? Now put that in the market for amateur porno movies. Would it be worth it? I know the cost of producing pornos is pretty low (especially amateur porn), but how profitable would it be?

I personally enjoy real amateur porn on the internet versus the staged scenes in ‘high cost’ produced pornos, but I don’t really have a desire to buy them when walking through the local adult movie shop. The picture quality is much lower, it is sometimes more funny than anything, so on and so on.

Back to the girl/girl action…I personally tire of it easier. 4 hours of different scenes in a regular porno compared to 4 hours of different scenes of women with women, I will take the former any time. The latter is basically the SAME thing each time, IMO.

My guess is that it is a specialized field and that there are significant differences between gay and lesbians (or men and women). I’m not sure about movies, but there are lodging establishments that specialize in gay and lesbian clientele. Many are “clothing optional” and this seems to appeal to gays more than lesbians. My past experience in a business with a lot of gay and lesbian clients is that the lesbian couples were more private and - if I had to guess - a lot less apt to film themselves for public exhibiton.

I never said it did. However, as someone who has seen a fair share of lesbian porn, I can tell you that the “lesbians” in movies bear no resemblance to the lesbians I’ve seen in real life (I used to live near DC’s gay district, so I’ve seen quite a few lesbians). Watching two attractive chicks get it on is hot; watching two real-life lesbians get it on (based on the lesbians I’ve seen first-hand) would not be hot. Since I think most men would think this way, I can assume there would be little market for real-life lesbians to make porn.

Of course it it, but it’s true. Porn itself is pretty offensive. Have you ever seen how they market the stuff?

Paging abby

You can say that about any group of people. It has nothing to do with lesbianism; it’s the basic nature of the entertainment industry.

Exactly. There’s maybe .5% of the entire population of Earth that I’d be interested in seeing have sex. The rest…shudder…

No, I think it relates a lot to this topic.

Look at regular porn. In professional productions, the women are always good looking. The guys, however, may or may not be. Ron Jeremy sure didn’t become a legend based on his looks. Even in amateur porn, the woman is usually attractive.

The main consumers of porn are guys. Guys, in general, want to see good looking women in their porn. So if you are going to have two women doing it together, then they want those two women to be good looking.

And, if we want to get into an intellectual discussion of porn, it’s also necessary to point out that those who view straight porn are looking for something different from those who view lesbian porn, at least as far as my discussions indicate. When talking to people who view heterosexual porn, they prefer it because they are imagining themselves in the role of the guy. For lesbian porn afficianados, it has more to do with the aesthetics of the situation – the inherent hotness of two attractive women doing sexual things. If this is true (and I think it is), then people who purchase lesbian porn certainly don’t want two ugly lesbians ruining the aesthetics.

Lesbian porn depends on attractive women. Since most lesbians are not all that attractive to straight men (the consumers of most porn), then why would there be an incentive to produce amateur lesbian videos?

I don’t think you can use Ron Jeremy as the standard of males in the porn industry. Would you say the majority of men in porn look like him, or are they generally at least of reasonable attractiveness?

Please don’t include me in your horrible generalisation. I’m pretty much just as attracted to lesbians (in a “Wow, hot woman” way, not a “Dude, chicks gettin’ it on!” way) in general as I am to straight women in general - most of the time (unless they’re with a partner) you can’t tell what sexuality they have anyway.

Yes, “On Our Backs” anyone?

That reminds me of two things. One: my favorite joke…“What do you call a lesbian with long fingernails?” SINGLE! Two, an SNL skit where a bunch of frat dogs wish to see two ladies getting it on. They think they’re getting a man pron setup, but instead get two granola girls who wear jeans and would be at home at a folk fest.

Oddly enough, for me (hetero male) the tomboys would do it for me much more than the ultra-
fems. Tyranny of the majority once again…
