Nope. For that matter, banning isn’t going to stop them from posting if they want to bad enough. Various ways to accomplish it.

No, and yes. One does need to wipe out the SDMB cookie, if you have it set to “remember me”, but those who are suspended or banned are able to read just as any poster who is logged out (for instance, at work, (Hal, I’m looking at you)) can read. No search capability etc., of course.
You know, I think we need to do something to really make new members feel welcome, and feel like valued additions to our community.
OK, so the admins don’t want to help the OP out.
We can do ourselves. From now on, whenever the Cryptoderk posts, even though he isn’t really banned, we all pretend we don’t even realize he is there! So, then, he knows what it’s like to be banned, and the Admins don’t have to bother.
If if works really well, we can just continue to pretend he is banned forever!

There is a message board out there where where banned posters congregate to make snarky comments about SDMB threads and posters.

For the record, they do not put children in prison for a day to see how it feels anymore. The notions of 'scared straight" were more of a media created love affair than an actual crime prevention strategy. It is another classic case of “it sounds good, so it must work”, like boot camps and living restrictions for sex offenders. In fact, studies have shown that programs like those actually increases criminality and deviance in children. The 2001 Truancy Prevention and Juvenile Crime Reduction Act addressed this issue in particular.

I have NO IDEA if they will ever be implemented. Don’t get your hopes up. This was discussed at least a couple of years ago, and I’ve heard nothing further. I’d like to see it happen, but I’d like to see a lot of things happen.
