Why was this thread closed instead of moved?

I just stumbled across this thread in the pit, where a guest posted a question that should have gone in GQ.

I was just wondering why fluiddruid decided to go ballistic on the poster and close the thread, instead of offering up a polite explanation and moving the thread to the proper location.

ETA: Maybe I shouldn’t say “go ballistic”, since he did say “Welcome to the boards.” But I still thought that SOP was to move the thread rather than close it.

I see also that the OP did start a new thread in GQ about 10 minutes after the thread was closed.

I just went and read the thread in question.

Yes, generally we move things but if there’s a lot of traffic it’s sometimes the best course of action to close the thread and tell the original poster to restart it in the more appropriate forum. Either way is acceptable.

I do not see where fluiddruid “went ballistic.” She explained the sitution and directed the OP where to go and what to do to rectify things. I admit she didn’t offer to show them kitten pictures or anything like that, not sure what you expect here.

When we read the written word it’s very easy to ascribe motive where none is intended . . . to assume the worst. We don’t have tone of voice or physical reactions to look at and the naked word is not always the best indicator of shades of meaning.

It’s always best to give the poster the benefit of the doubt in every situation.
