To a certain extent you are right Waverly. I think he is indeed play acting, but at the same time, he is being quite serious.
Now, I am taking this from his postings, but I believe that Bill sees us, the members of this board, as his family. And he wants recognition (if it cannot be positive, he will accept negative) from his family so he expands upon a point of view he might actually hold to such an extent or in such a way, it will irritate fellow family members.
Often times he will bait fellow members to the extent that they are chastised or even banned like a child might do trying to get a fellow family member in trouble with his/her parents thus having more affection for him/her. In this case the mods and admins serve as surrogate parents (Daddy Manny?) for Bill.
In this way he gets our responses and that gives him validation. Just as a child will purposely do something wrong to get some kind of response from a brother or sister, even if it is to be chewed out by that sibling. You will note WB often apologizes humbly after many his little rants thus gaining forgiveness from (symbolic) siblings and (he hopes) even his (symbolic) parents.
Following his plays for attention, he usually returns to MPSIMS or GQ to post polls about this or that thus attempting to prove to his family how harmless he is.
I imagine that Bill realizes some of this, but like the child in a real family would never admit it to those family members.
What Ben said. It’s “cheap grace,” one of the things that I destest most about some people’s Christianity. It’s the idea that as long as you love Jesus and accept his sacrifice, you can say or do any fucked up thing imaginable and you’re still golden come Judgment Day. Disgusting.
One vaguely happy thought: one of these times in one of his periodic rages, he’s gonna cross the line. And the angry explosions are getting worse, IMO. Look at what he posted to Esprix in that GD thread I started (linked in my prev. post). Compare that to some of his earlier ones and there’s a steady slide downhill. He’s keeping more of temper bottled up more of the time so when it does get out, it gets out more explosively.
As an aside, can you imagine what life must be like in the WB household or business? He says stupid, hurtful or offensive things for days, then suddenly and without warning explodes. No wonder he’s been sued a bunch of times.
There’s no doubt in my mind. Sooner or later, he’ll explode a little too loudly or inappropriately and be gone. He can’t keep walking on the razor’s edge without eventually getting cut.
Well, but his conduct in the thread has been better, and I even understood his line of argument there. Esprix had said something like, “When I use the word ‘fundie’, I’m referring to fundimentalists who bother me about their religion and try to convert me,.” and what WB was trying to say with those posts, I think, was “Does that still make it ok to call them that? If I called you a ‘faggot’ because you constantly post about your sexuality, which bothers me, would that be ok?”
Gotcha ya. I just wanted to make sure we were on the same wavelength. While the WB might not have warranted that kind of strong language in this thread, surely his history is sordid enough to justify dredging it out.
I understand. I just want to be absolutely clear that this is not exactly the argument I was making. I do recognize more than a little human frailty, so I try not to let my opinion of a person’s conduct interfere with my analysis of his arguments, unless of course he is proscribing advice.
People tell me my humor is subtle.
Yes, much lower. He hadn’t started cursing. I went right for the momma-oral sex snipe. Where his intellectual level resides compared to mine may be a subject of some dispite, but as far as his quality of language goes, I snaked under the door before he could grab the knob.
It’s no biggie. We are talking politely in GD. Hell, I even asked if this thread was necessary. <shrug>
I’ll manage. I know people down there. They’ll set me up with the good shit. Phlegethon Brown, they call it.
Cocytus Cobra is pretty good, I hear, but supposedly the best is Lethal Lethe - the best part of that is even if you get a bad trip, you won’t remember it.
Need some help with that strawman? You have the eyes a slightly crooked and he’s a bit under stuffed. What is that third leg doing… oh, I see. Whatever floats your boat. Let me edit your question for accuracy:
So we should offer termination of pregnancy simply because a woman was brutally raped?
Hey, if stem cells have rights, doesn’t the little egg penetrated by the sperm of the wicked rapist also have rights? We mustn’t let common sense or compassion for the rape victim get in the way of impassioned dogma.
HairyPotter: I encourage you to start a GD on the topic. I don’t remember there ever being one. Now quit adding to the melodrama and cease hijacking Guin’s rant. BTW got a cite for the ‘stem cell have rights’ comment? I recall limits being placed on their use, but I don’t recall the Bill of Rights being altered to include them any time recently.
Adding to melodrama in the Pitt!!! Pardon my terrible transgression. I guess I’ll need the guidance of seasoned SDMB sages, such as yourself, to learn how to behave appropriately in the formal, well-mannered confines of the Pit. Great sarcastic reference to my “Bill of Rights” post reply. I can see I’m going to have to be really careful in the presence of your lightning-fast wit.
I’m curious, are you a lawyer, or do you just behave obnoxiously as a hobby?
The rant was good, it was biting, it was sharp. It was building towards a lovely crescendo of vitriol, then… “EMU FECES!”
That reminded me of a Saturday Night Live skit with Patrick Stewart as the devil, trying to incite terror in his minions, but just not being able to turn a phrase.
Any person who argues that a woman should be forced by law to carry the fetus she concieved when she was raped and brutalized for nine months is a misogynistic prick.
I shudder to think about the sort of America some of you envision. Womens’ rights are slowly, carefully being chipped away, and before long we’ll forbid women from being educated and publicly stone them for making eye contact with men outside of their family.
I envision an America where people don’t rape other people, and those who still do are so quickly executed that anyone else who would think about it, the thought of the impending punishment would be enough to deter them.
I also envision an America where life is so cherished, EVERYONES life, that even those who are unwantedly pregnant will spare the life of the innocent. Not an easy thing for someone to do, I know, but why are we now, as a nation more worried about the life and rights of criminals than we are about the life and rights of the unborn?
