Will a cow spit out her cud?

That’s my question. I ask because of this;

In Texas, there is a town called New Braunfels, where there is a large German-speaking population.

One day, a local rancher driving down a country road noticed a man using his hand to drink water from the his stock pond.

The rancher rolled down the window, and shouted, “Sehr angenehm! Trink das wasser nicht. Die kuhen haben dahin gesheissen.”

Which means: (“Glad to meet you! Don’t drink the water. The cows have spit out their tootsie rolls in it.”) The man shouted back, “I’m from New York, and just down here campaigning for Obama’s health care plan. I can’t understand you. Please speak in English.”

The rancher replied, “Use both hands. You’ll get more.”

I’ve been around a lot of cows, and heard the joke with other objects, but never though to inquire till now.
Peace,
mangeorge
BTW; I’ve even heard the cud called a “tootsie roll”.

I assume you’re just trying to make a political point in the wrong forum but, on the off chance you want an actual answer, “geschissen” (not “gesheissen”) doesn’t mean “spit” in German.

Actually, hogarth, there are much better ways to make a political point than with a funny joke that weakly expresses the opposit of my politics. I really am curious about my question, and only included the joke because it’s funny and I like to share a good chuckle.
So lighten up and have a chuckle with me.

To answer the question, no, not usually. Expelling the cud is a sign of illness in cattle.

In that case, the translation is bowdlerized. The German is garbled, but it’s saying that the cows had crapped in the water. Cow flop doesn’t look like Tootsie Rolls, of course, but human crap has a certain resemblance.

Indeed.

Wait a minute, the cows were spitting poop?

No, the farmer never mentioned spitting. Only the bad translation in the original joke does.

The German translates to " Don’t drink that water. The cows have defecated in there"

ETA: (nitpick) and in that part of Texas, they’d be more likely to call a stock pond a “tank”.
