While I think that the odds are pretty high that he will resign (1 in 3), this is the biggest reason that I think he won’t and don’t expect him to.
I think we’re about to see the most laws enacted to prevent financial abuse of the Presidential office of all American history. I could even see a new amendment being passed which limits the use of the President’s ability to pardon, which prevents it in cases where the President is being investigated for corruption or other crimes.
Excellent point, but he is so mentally unstable, he may just be unable to take the constant criticism. His behavior in the week before the inauguration was bizarre and his behavior afterwards has been even stranger: his first major speech after the inauguration was to the intelligence community and he used the opportunity to rant about the media under-reporting attendance at his inauguration. That is not normal, there is something really wrong with him and he seems to be struggling to get through the weekend let alone four years.
Especially if Trump drives the party into the ground at some point. The likelihood of impeachment and removal would be driven entirely by his popularity. Nothing else will ever matter. They will excuse anything if he’s popular enough, and make up any old crap to get rid of him if he ends up way underwater. Republican senators didn’t turn on Nixon because they looked into their hearts and decided he was guilty of serious crimes. They did it because the midterms were in three months and they wanted to try to stanch the bleeding.
True. It does seem to be reeeeeally important to him to think he is immensely popular, even loved. It doesn’t have to be true, exactly, but he has to be able to believe the illusion. So the cognitive dissonance of all the criticism, low ratings, etc., must be causing the gears to grind.
It would be quite amusing (and, I realize, extremely unlikely) if he would step down after a week in office. Like one of those Hollywood marriages that lasts for a weekend and ends when both parties sober up. “The crooked, lying media and Hillary and Obama made it impossible for me to make America great again!”
I think there’s a chance that he just kind of disappears from view after a while, like some North Korean dictator. They’ll send out fake tweets from him every once in a while, but really he’ll be heavily medicated back in the East Wing.
The Republicans will use him to push through their wet dream of legislation. By then, his approval numbers will be even lower, but he’ll be all too happy to take credit for these successes. They will find something to impeach him for, remove him from office, and blame him for the unpopular policies that they pushed through.
It’s either impeachment or the nuthouse for him – hopefully sooner rather than later.
BTW, since you’re such a fan of his [del]incoherent rants[/del] er…speeches, surely you must have listened to his [del]unhinged ramblings[/del], speech at the CIA yesterday, right? He makes Duterte look presidential.
I know this is wishful thinking on my part, but I think he will crack under pressure. I don’t think it will take long. I don’t think he will resign voluntarily. I give him 6 months, which is 5 months and 30 days of who knows what kind of damage he will cause.
21 months until the midterms. I hope people are ramping up campaigns now.
No, it wouldn’t. Not by a long shot. What is with people acting like a regular Republican is worse than a nationalist, White nationalist, protectionist, and just all around pyschopath? Trump keeps all the worst things of Republicanism, while getting rid of the good parts.
The only reason not to want Pence is the Supreme Court thing. There’s at least a small chance that Trump won’t choose a textualist (aka conservative who pretends he’s following the text) or someone even more conservative. And then we only need to make sure that no more than one other judge dies.
After that appointment, Trump is 100% worse. The only way that’s better is if the damage is extremely limited, and he pulls down the GOP with him. But then, that’s why they will be willing to get rid of him.
As much as I’d love to have this presidency be as short as possible, I don’t think that he will resign or be impeached. It’s possible that he will die in office, but I don’t think the odds of that are terribly high either.
It seems like a lot of people are assuming that Trump will be subjected to the same stresses, difficulties and discomforts as previous president. But why would he be? Having a packed, managed schedule as president isn’t something dictated by law, just by custom. Trump doesn’t view the presidency as being a public servant, he views it as a more powerful form of being boss. And as the boss, he’s certainly not going to create an unpleasant work environment for himself. He’ll do the business of the presidency on his schedule, as he feels like it. For him, being president will be no more or less stressful than his previous life. He won’t have to quit because the job is too demanding. He will simply ignore demands he doesn’t like.
He also won’t be impeached. Given how much Congress has already been willing to overlook, I don’t see what could possibly change to make it worth it to them to try to impeach him. For one thing, any impeachment attempt would be far from guaranteed to succeed. And as the saying goes, if you’re going to go after the king, you’d better be sure you’re going to succeed. As long as Trump is willing to sign Republican agenda into law, I really can’t image what he could do that would cause such outrage as to make republicans feel they had no choice but to remove Trump. His administration will be such a flood of scandals that it would be hard for any of them to stand out in a way to make them seem important. Yes, Republicans would be completely happy with Pence as president, but there would be a huge cost to them to remove their own party’s candidate, angering all those newly converted working class rust belt voters. They’re not going to do that unless things were incredibly dire.
So, we can all look forward to a full 4 years from Trump, and most likely an additional 4 after that.
If that’s the case he will fall into a nixon type trap. He is being watched closely and desparate schemes to cash in on the presidency will out at some point.
How bout this: he liquidates all of his holdings and gives it to his kids, instructing them to bet it all with the bookies. Further, he has them wager on the exact day for better odds. Then he quits, triples his money, pays off his mafia debts, and buys the entire island of Manhattan. Which he renames as “Trump Island.”
I certainly would. That doesn’t justify wishing ill on Trump, but I would put it that I would have preferred Pence to Trump, but now we have a fait accompli.
As far as Trump resigning, put it this way. He ran for President to get attention. Quick, name a position anywhere in the world that gets more attention than President of the United States.
this sounds right: so he won’t age like other presidents because he isn’t capable of understanding the responsibilities of the office never mind actually taking them on.
he will, however, keep gaining weight - and he’s already at triple chins - and he will hate this so much he will resign, making up whatever reason he likes.
