Will you pronounce your screen name please?

Shkaw-eie-luuuu-air-rrk

I use the standard English pronunciation of Siam. The Thais say it “sa-yahm.”

The only thing that might trip people up in my name is the Z – it’s pronounced separately. var-los-zee, not var-losz. It comes from a real name my friends and I stumbled across in high school (Varlos Z. Brathwaite) that became something of an inside joke. I think some people here do get it wrong because about one in ten posters, when writing my screen name here, types Varloz.

I briefly dated a Dolores. She, too, was very insistent that people not substitute an ‘E’ for that first ‘O’. What is it with you gals?

ess - ul

Not ess- el

ne-maw-sin-ay

Though a lot of people say nem-oh-seen. I often use mnems or mnemos as a short form (“nems” or “nem-ohs”).

Either way, the m is silent

I would never have guessed. I’ve been mentally calling you “nem-o-sign” (or maybe nem-uh-zign?) for years.

Probably doesn’t need explanation, but: J.B.

I guess you would have to prounounce mine as “She-Is-A-Dork” because a great many of the pronounciations in this thread are news to me.

Signed,

ROO-bee

Which one?

Yay! Another Roo! Roos’ of the world unite!

RAY-j’l in about 2.1 syllables. Sometimes pronounced with three (Ray-jee-el) which isn’t wrong, just more than I generally want to bother with.

The angel and/or the medieval Arab poet might have other favored pronunciations, but they’ve never contacted me to grumble about it.

Mine is:

Kap-tcha.

Why?..because that’s how i sounded once when i sneezed. I can tell you, it is weird to see someone on the bus sneeze, then have this thoughtful look on their face!

Either one, but it’s easier to drop the first

So, Kwag-dog the Mercaptan. Thanks, I totally get it now.

Sorry man, I’ve been looking at your name crosseyed for years. It’s totally hardwired now.

QtM’s name is pronounced how it’s spelled, it’s just that those sounds are very awkward to non-Mercotians.

The clever names here were what caused me to not join right away. Czarcasm? Shirley Ujest? Great names. I lurked for about a year before joining and simply couldn’t come up with a clever name. It finally got to the point that I couldn’t keep my mouth shut any longer so I registered as Ruby and that was that.

Kane Zinth? Kane Ex Inth?

Seriously I don’t even know anymore. I made it when I was 12 and thought I was a hacker on AOL 3.0.

I just found this thread. Fascinating!

Here’s mine, in case anyone ever wondered…

Eck (like tech) wua (like what) poise (like boys)

Ah, youth. What fools we were.

The problem is that it’s mispronounced the way it’s spelled.
