Wimbledon = Yay!

I have been fortunate this past week and been able to catch most of the Wimbledon coverage. Anybody else watching? Some really good matches have taken place. For example the now legendary Mark “46 ace” Philippoussis versus Agassi game. The Roddick and Williams sisters games have also been really quite entertaining. Speaking of Roddick though, anyone catch the game he played against Srichaphan? It was brilliant! I found myself slowly rooting for Srichaphan to win though! I am really looking forward to the Serena Williams versus Henin-Hardenne match. I hope Williams smokes her (a little revenge for Paris)! Overall I’m gonna go with Henman and Venus Williams. Should be a good finals.

Cheers.

Yes, I’m watching hours daily and enjoying it as well. Wimbledon’s always been my favorite of the Grand Slam tournaments. Looks like Henman’s in trouble against Grosjean… I think this is Roddick’s tournament to lose right now. The women’s semis should be really interesting. We’ve got the four best players squaring off, one Williams sister vs. one Belgian apiece. :wink: Should be lots of fun.

I am fairly certain that Henman will take care of Grosjean. I’m not really a huge fan of Roddick, don’t know too much about him, but I will admit that he has been dominating.

I love Wimbledon–I have been watching it for years. Roddick is obviously the favorite at this point, but something about him irks me. I’m hoping Henman will win. He’s really the only one worth rooting for right now, in my opinion. I hope the rain delay gives him time to regroup against Grosjean.

On the women’s side, I hope Henin-Herdenne smokes Williams, but I’m not counting on it. If not Henin, then I hope Venus gets back on track and wins it all.

Yeah, me too. Can’t put my finger on it though. Henman all the way!

Ha! We should make a friendly bet. Whatever the outcome though, everyone will be talking about this match for a few days. I suspect there will be lots of controversy.

I don’t see it being controversial, but I’m expecting a very good match.

I’d love to wager, but I don’t feel too confident in Henin-Hardenne. I just think Serena will be too powerful on grass, where the short points matter most. Henin-Hardenne has a beautiful game and exquisite ground strokes. But Serena will win more free points. Plus, you KNOW she’s pissed about Paris…she’ll probably pile drive poor little Justine. You never know, however…Serena can get down mentally and start spraying errors all over the place. But I think that after the boos and whistles and Henin-Hardenne’s alleged cheating, Serena’s gonna be pissed. Either way, I’m looking forward to a good match.

Perhaps not, but I think the media is definitely gonna make a big deal about the game.

I wonder how the crowd is gonna react tomorrow? At first I thought that maybe Henin-Hardenne might get booed, but I now suspect that they won’t boo either of them.

I think you are right about the media. I’m sure they will make a much bigger deal about the French Open match. They’ll show it in the preview show and then they’ll talk about it for an hour. Wimbledon’s a classy place, however, and I agree…I don’t forsee many if any boos.

I hope they boo Roddick, however, just for being a punk.:smiley:

Any news of the Philippoussis-Popp result? Last I heard, it was
two sets apiece: 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 2-2.

The Poo fought back after the match was ajourned due to rain.
Also, Grosjean was leading Henman, 7-6 (10-8), 3-6, 6-3, 1-2.

Anyone with more recent info?

Nope, that’s the most recent.

Rain in Britain. Gee.

They’re finishing the two matches tomorrow, as well as starting and finishing the other men’s quarterfinals and both women’s semis.

I am now calling Federer and Venus.

Hot off the press! Mark Philippoussis – the Poo himself – is has thrased Grosjean and it through to the Final.

<does Australian happy dance>

Federer demolished Roddick!!!

I’m thinking Federer and Serena. Not that I give a limp fart about which Williams sister wins. I was hoping it would be Justine and Andy. Oh, well.

What was that drug that Venus Williams took during the delay in her match against Crisjpin (sp unsure)? I want some? Crijpin was all over Williams, brief delay, then suddenly the ailing Williams just CREAMS Cirsjpin in the last two sets. WTF? I’ve seen matches where the momentum shifts after a delay, but this was just TOO much, esp. considering that Williams was supposed to be ailing. Seems kinda suspicous to me.

I was surprised Federer had such an easy win against Roddick. I really thought that the tournament was Roddick’s for the taking, although I wasn’t rooting for him. It seems he still has a ways to go in the big matches.

I gotta root for Federer in the final against Philappoussis. Federer seems to have a nice, all-around grass game, while Philappoussis pretty much lives and dies by his serve, although he has shown a remarkable amount of guts in his matches of late.

Venus has got to beat Serena…how many times can she lose to her sister in a row? That stomach muscle doesn’t bode well, but I’d like to see Venus regain some glory.

Philappoussis is going down. Did you see Federer?!? He’s a robot! Look like this weekend should be good.

They said she had her stomach taped (Ace bandage or whatever, I guess). Plus she had some time off the court, which helped her - she got to rest and regroup, and Clijsters had time to think about how close she was to the final and put pressure on herself.

This injury has been bothering her for months, and she was clearly ailing during the match. She didn’t serve anywhere near as hard as she could for most of the match, avoided certain shots, and noticeably winced on a few points. There’s no drug that cures stomach muscle injuries. Even a cortisone shot hurts and takes time to work. She came out and improved her play substantially, and Clijsters couldn’t compete. That’s all.

Well, four grand slam finals in a row so far. I’d say she might have a better shot this time, but the stomach muscle thing gives me real doubts. She needs to be 100% to beat Serena. I think this’ll be better than some of their past run-ins, but whether Venus can win depends largely on her mental state - in the past, she hasn’t seemed to want to beat Serena as badly as Serena has wanted to win. If that changes, we could see a different result.
