Ahem. Any Mets fans are crying in their sleeves right now.
I literally can’t look. I may avoid baseball news all weekend and just see how it shakes out on Monday.

And as a clearly deluded, probably brain-damaged, hope-springs-eternal-type Phillies fan, I am on the verge of my 500th stroke in the last three weeks alone. So I share your pain (sort of). These last three games are worth watching, if you’re not involved, but I can’t watch.
My quote in the Op does not actually cover that fact, so I ask forgiveness.
I’ll forgive you, Jim. I just don’t know if I can forgive myself. I’ve watched every game.
I’ve seen a lot of stupid Mets losses and our share of colapses, but I’ve never felt like they were sucking my love of baseball away the way they have this season.
The Cardinals & Tigers looked pretty awful going into the playoffs last year, so I’ll just keep my fingers crossed and hope they somehow hold on. I really want to serve that ice cream cake that has a picture of Mr. Met and says “2007 NL east Champs.” I don’t want to put the Phanatic on it, dammit!
Here is a link to an article on the worst regular season collapses in history; the Mets would rank second on this list, having had a 99.80% playoff chance on Sept. 12th.

That was an interesting article. It kind of takes the fun out of the debate however.
I always considered the Phold a different animal then the '78 Red Sox or '51 Dodgers. It is interesting to see them all lumped together. I never even thought about the Angels collapse, I guess because as a Yankee fan we were too busy competing with Seattle for the Wild Card. Good one to add to my short list.

It was interesting, but the percentages used in the article don’t seem to make all that much sense; I think their formula skews values too high for a such a high variance sport.

Yeah that was an amazing year for us Mariners fans. It’s pretty neat having our first year entering the playoffs on the back of the biggest collapse (or comeback, depending on your point of view :)) in baseball history.
Nobody notices that the Colorado Rockies have won 11 in a row and could well end up winning their division, playing the Diamondbacks at home for the final three games. The NL champ is going to come from the West division (this year and for the next five), the Central and East are just terrible.
The concensus opinion is the three teams with the best young talent are Arizona, Colorado, and LA.
After all, isn’t that the real reason the Rocky statue is so important to the city? We’ll take what champs we can get, even if they’re fictitious.
Just for the record, Rocky lost the big fight in the first movie. I’m hoping the Phillies fare better.
, sorry, but it is news worthy, or at least Café worthy.
I hope your toe is feeling better. Please remember, this is only the late season record. I am still recovering from the greatest collapse ever in sports.

Negative. I’ve been noticing. What the Rockies have done this season is amazing, especially considering that so many people–myself included–believed that the franchise just has too many obstacles stacked against it to ever be a big winner. A big round of applause for Colorado, even if they don’t pull it off and get in the playoffs.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a Phillies-Rockies playoff series. The ball would be flying around the yard every inning of every game.
The Mets are losing 7-4 in the 5th at home on the strength of another Perez meltdown.
(Side note: Moose just pissed away a 7-2 win by giving up 4 in the 5th. If the Yanks need a 4th pitcher in the post season, I really hope they pick one of the two kids.) (Wow that was quick, Damon just hit a long Homer Run to put the score 8-6)

I’m fully aware of that, but he won the rematch, he defended his title from Clubber Lang as well, and to hear some Philly types he won the Cold War too.
Its official, Mets lose and Phillies win. Insult to injury, Padres are on the verge of winning, so the Mets would be 2 behind for the Wild Card.
Thanks for pointing that out, Jimmy.
Remind me to say something mean to you if we ever meet.

That is not really a record about collapses, as shown by the fact that the number two team had a 51% record and the number three team a 57% record over the stretch. These are just occasions where their opponents had a good finish to the season.
But I echo a previous poster: the next best thing to a Braves win is a Mets collapse.
