With the Mets' loss and the Philly's win, we are on the cusp of a historic collapse.

Dbacks will get the Cubs. Best record gets worst record in first round.

Best record normally gets wild card. But in this case, you are right – there&s an exception that says the wild card cannot play the winner of its division.

Hmmm…is that right? I’m not saying you are wrong, but I thought it was best vs. worst record, regardless of how the playoff slot was won.

You are right about the interdivision WC rule though.

We feel for you. Really.

What we feel for you is an entirely different question.

(Here’s to small victories. Now lets get on to where it really matters. I ain’t relaxin’ yet.)

What an amazing night, the celebration at Fenway Park was a blast to watch/listen to. The whole team stayed in the clubhouse after Boston had won to watch the Yankee’s game (okay, one person left in the eighth, don’t get me started) . At the time initially the Yanks were up, and I as well as many others thought that we wouldn’t have the opportunity to clinch until tomorrow.

I cannot imagine how frustrated What Exit? must be after watching what happened though. Three in the ninth? A suicide squeeze in the tenth?! If the roles were reversed I might have thrown the remote through my TV.

But it was the classic Red Sox celebration after that, Booze booze booze everywhere. Much hugging and yelling, and the party even spread out to the field, where many fans stayed long after our win to watch the Baltimore game on the large on-field video screen. I’m sure none of them brought ponchos, which is something they’ll regret because anyone within the first ten rows on the home field dugout got soaked with champagne. No one was complaining though.

Now all we need is to do is have three more of these.

Just curious, what was the largest Met lead in the standings? Going through MLB.com, I’m not finding any past standings with a huge Met lead. 3 1/2 on July 1, 1 1/2 on July 15, 3 1/2 on August 1, 3 1/2 on August 15, 2 on August 30. I don’t see how this compares to the 1978 Red Sox choke.

I was annoyed at the moment, but in the end, once we failed to sweep Boston the second time, I was concentrating on Detroit being eliminated and hoping the Indians have a better record than the Angels so we don’t play the Angels in the first round. Your team matches up better to them then we do and if I have to face the Angels, I would rather do it in a 7 games series. Another way to look at it. All 4 teams are fairly equal. The Angles have the best field manager of the 4 teams. That usually means something in the postseason.

This is a different type of collapse. The Great Collapses I always thought were the 51 Dodgers and the 78 Red Sox. We need to add the 95 Angels to that mix. This is a late season collapse that rivals the 64 Philly “Phold”.

Jim (BTW: I will be in Baltimore later today and at the game tomorrow and maybe tonight)

Good point and good luck. But the Indians are scary too. All the AL teams are. I look forward to our series with Cleveland though.

An actual question though. Some people were sort of looking down on the Yankees for their champagne celebration when they clinched. Because it was “only a wildcard” reach. I’m guessing the same sorts will say the same about the Red Sox when they “should” have had the division won much earlier since we had such a lead. I disagree on both accounts.

The Yankees should be very proud of the fact that they came back so strongly after many had written them off already the the season, and the Sox should celebrate for finally winning a season after the drought.

My question though is (since I don’t have as good direct access to NY media), is how good was the Yankee celebration? I made my post above just because it was so fun to listen to the Red Sox players on the field embracing, celebrating, and spraying champagne all over those Sox fans who stayed to watch and cheer along with the player.

It was just a really nice Boston sports moment last night with players, coaches, management, and fans all celebrating together.

Once again, good luck. I like how interesting the NL post-season is becoming, but one we get there I can’t wait to watch the AL side.

On September 12th, the Mets had a 7-game lead over the Phillies.

The NLDS is still in the air. The 'Backs have clinched a playoff spot, but not the division championship. If they lose both tonight’s and tomorrow’s game at Colorado and the Padres win both of theirs vs. Milwaukee, the Pads are the division champs and the 'Backs the wild card.

I’ve bought my post season tix, anyway, for game 2.

Arizona has lost, but so has San Diego. Arizona wins the NL West.

If San Diego wins tomorrow, they’re in. If they lose and Colorado wins, then they must play Colorado for the wild card.

What will be confusing is if San Diego loses, Colorado wins, and New York and Philly both win. They all four teams will be 89-73. I would assume that pairs off San Diego and Colorado for the WC, and Philly and New York for the East.

What’s fascinating is that Colorado’s even being in the discussion is a hell of a comeback, and hardly anyone has noticed it. On Sept. 1, Colorado was 69-66; they have gone 20-6 since.

According to the AP, in this scenario the Mets and Phillies play for the NL East title, and the loser goes into a three-team playoff with San Diego and Colorado. The Rockies, who have the best head-to-head record among the three, would have the option of either taking a bye but having to play on the road, or taking two home games.

Here’s a slightly more in-depth explanation, which seems to disagree with the AP article in one point–it seems to say that the Rockies can play one at home and then one on the road, or one on the road. The AP’s take makes a great deal more sense.

All of which is probably moot, as the Mets are currently down by six. There could still be some tiebreakers, but not quite as complicated.

Holey moley. The Marlins just scored 7 runs against the Mets in the top of the 1st.

The Mets may have to hope the Phillies are equally inept today.

I would come in here and talk some shit but the Marlins swept the Cubs this week so…

The Mets lost, the Phillies won. The Phillies will now play the wild Card, whomever that ends up being, and the Mets will make tee times.

The Mets were booed off the field, as they deserved to be.

But we’ll have a tiebreaker; the Padres lost and the Rockies won (13 wins in 14 games to close the season! Holy crap!) so they play tomorrow in Denver to determine who goes to Philadelphia and who goes to the golf course.

Oh man, this is one of the exceedingly rare times when I wish I was home in Philly.

I was at Baltimore watching the Yankees beat the O’s and I swear most of the stadium was scoreboard watching more than watching the game on the field. There were a lot of Yankee and Philly’s fans at the game. The score slowly coming up caused much discussion.

Philly’s fans, especially the older ones were extremely happy that the Mets can now be called the Greatest Late Season collapse.

Anyone know when the one game playoff game is being played. How about if it will be televised?

Jim

According to this, it’s tonight at 5:37 mountain time (so 7:30) on TBS.

Hurray! I get TBS up here!

I suspect though that I will mute the TV and listen to KOA on the internet. Hopefully they won’t be too out of sync.
