Except who’s buying a new OS? Nobody buys a new OS except when they buy a new computer. Never happens.
You already paid for Windows 10 when you bought the license for Windows 8 or Windows 7 that came with your machine. It costs Microsoft nothing if you upgrade, and saves them some hassle if you do.
Or causes them some hassle. I’m not saying Win10 is great, I have in on my home machine but I’m only playing games or browsing and so I barely use it and have no opinion on it. And Microsoft is kind of blowing this upgrade rollout by pushing it so aggressively that people are getting upgraded by accident.
I’m just saying that they’re not upgrading you because they’re hoping to make money by showing you ads, or charging you a monthly fee for Win10. They’re hoping to make money by reducing the installed base of older operating systems that they have to support. They don’t want to have to be supporting Windows 8 in 2026.
