As my last post stated, I recently watched First Knight again, and utterly detested it. But aside from “Why was this movie ever greenlighted?” what I really want to know is: Is this Sean Connery’s worst movie?
I mean, The Avengers was pretty bad, but I enjoyed it, and I know I’ve seen a couple of movies with him in it that sucked so hard I didn’t even bother watching more than fifteen minutes of it or bother to learn their names, but I’m sure someone somewhere would say they were good. So, tell me: Is it, or isn’t it?
Never Say Never Again the awful knock-off Bond movie they were able to do thanks to a co-authorship on some of the novels (its messy, don’t ask). The earlier movies I can understand (it was the seventies- we lost our collective sense of taste for a bit-- hence Disco et al)- but to sully his Bond past with that terrible turkey. . . .
Also the Avengers was horrid. But Uma Thurman and Ralph Finnes (sp?) were bad in it too.
Agreed with Morgainelf. Not even the badness that was Never Say Never Again could compare with the jaw-dropping sense of almost Lovecraftian horror I experienced upon seeing Highlander II.
Well, he’s undoubtedly made many terrible films I haven’t seen (I’m perfectly willing to believe that Highlander 2 was awful), but of the movies I’ve seen, his worst were…
The exact title escapes me, but I think it was something like “Family Business.” He’s a career criminal who talks his son and grandson (Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick) into joining him in a big heist. We’re supposed to regard him as charming, and the heist as rather cool… but he comes across as a jerk, as does Broderick. Astonishingly, the only sympathetic character in the film is Hoffman, whom the film treats as a bad guy for his lack of enthusiasm for committing a crime.
“Medicine Man” was a preachy bore.
“Russia House” was as dull as dishwater… like most film adaptations of John Le Carre, actually.
Hey, I’ve seen Wrong is Right. It’s a confused mish-mash, but some of the ideas bounding around inside it are interesting. I always got the feeling it suffered a lot from being edited for television. And the final scene (you know what I’m talking about) goes a long way.
I have three weak ones (although two have been praised a bunch) and the winner of this contest.
The Next Man - It starts nowhere and goes nowhere. Russia House - A major snoozer in spite of a very good cast. Marnie - Yes, I know Hitchcock directed it, yes I know Tipi Hedrin (major babe) co-stared, Yes, I know critics loved it, but it was really boring.
Finally!!!
Shalako - This was a German-made western with an international cast where everyone spoke their own language and then was dubed to make it seem (sort of) as if they understood one another. Connery played a wiley mountainman (in the desert) attempting an American accent, romancing (as I remember it) Bridgit Bardot. The movie was incredibly painful. It made Darby O’Gill and the Little People seem like high drama. I believe this film was a major contributing factor to the death of westerns. It is hard to explain just how bad this film is. If you get a chance see this film just to experience true badness.
