There’s no film with Connery called “The Hill” in my Moviehound Guide. Perhaps you’re referring to a gonzo Euro alternate title, kase? Could it be what we call “The Rock,” co-starring Nicholas Cage?
Nawww, that flick was just too entertaining for this thread.
I’m going to check this out on IMDB… will report back shortly.
Actually I have always been a fan of Sean’s. Not fanatic, but he’s had some good movies and I’ve been lucky enough to miss most of the bad ones.
I started reading this thread thinking, “damn, Sean Connery a bad actor, bullshit”
So, I got to checking his reviews and remembered some of his movies I had apparently forced myself to forget.
According to most sources I found “The Avengers” wins hands down. I included this one cite because it actually rates the show as a ZERO on a scale of 1-4. http://www.all-reviews.com/videos-4/avengers.htm
I’d say I’ve been damned lucky. I never saw this one either.
Oh, The Avengers, no question. That rare film that actually got every single thing wrong. Although Highlander II comes close. But then, so does the original Highlander.
I think Kase might have been trying to include The Hill in the list of good movies Scrivener. I remember seeing it and it was a pretty good movie - stayed very close to the book.
It was a “small” movie about British soldiers during WWII in a British prison camp which tried to make them back into good soldiers. The title came from the Tommys having to run a backpack full of dirt to the top of a man-made hill and dump the backpack thus making the hill a little larger on the next trip.
Since “Highlander II” is the worst movie ever made, that is obviously the correct answer to the question.
Of course, “Highlander II” is such a transcendently atrocious film - indeed, it is the very definition of bad cinema - that it almost makes the question boring. It’s like asking “Who is the greatest hockey player of all time?” - you just say “Gretzky” and the discussion ends. A far more interesting question is “who is the greatest hockey player of all time after Gretzky?” and then you can debate the merits of Lemieux, Orr, Howe, Richard, and Esposito.
So the real question is, “What is the worst Sean Connery movie ever, aside from Highlander II?” Not easy to answer; Connery has been in some of the worst movies of all time. Indeed, has ANY actor hailed as a great actor ever been in so many truly atrocious movies? I think any one of the following could be fairly classified as Grade Z Turkeys:
Zardoz
The Avengers
Entrapment
Never Say Never Again
Just Cause
Meteor
Zardoz (It deserved double mention)
The Next Man (The Arab Conspiracy)- deadly dull mess, so dull, when I would tell people about it, I forgot the title I saw it under. I’ve been trashing a movie called “The Fourth Man” by mistake for years.
The Avengers - one of the few times I wanted to demand a refund from the theater.
Sword Of The Valiant - “Body, give me my paycheck for this piece of shite, so I can get out of here.”
Shalako - when I finally watched it all the way through, it made me nauseous.
The Molly Maguires - I can’t believe this one hasn’t been mentioned yet. The whole movie is the cinematic equivalent of Thorazine.
Highlander II - I barely count this as a Connery film, he’s in it for so little time and has so little to do. But, IMO, it’s not quite the worst film of all time.
The Presidio - What the hell happens in this one? I can never stay focused on it long enough to watch all of it.
Meteor - not his fault, has an all-star disaster film ever been any good?
I unnominate “Family Business”, yes, it’s a mediocre drama that was misadvertised as a caper comedy. There are good moments, they just don’t add up. Plus, the “He fell,” scene cracks me up.
BTW, to those who haven’t seen or heard of “The Hill”, seek it out. It’s an unjustly underappreciated lost gem of a film and book.
