Yeah, came in here to say this. Those Steelers throwbacks are hideous.
Did anyone mention the Hartford Whalers pants-uniforms (I think they were called “Cooperalls”)? I think this was during the era when the NHL was trying to shed the whole hockey/boxing match thing - this was supposed to make the players look more, uh, respectful?..
The second picture’s pants look like a Reebok tracksuit. You could honestly go to the gym in those things and be thought of as a dad who’s turning into his parents. (The guy’s moustache doesn’t help).
The Flyers wore them too.
The idea behind them was actually better protection; they were designed such that the player’s legs and hips were better protected and pads stayed where they were supposed to, while subtracting some weight, believe it or not.
I mentioned them early in the thread. They were reportedly very hot to wear, and the NHL subsequently mandated short pants.
