Yesterday, I came home to find a ribbon on my doorknob. It was an award ribbon, like you might get from the dollar store- you know, the kind that say “#1 kid” or “Birthday Girl” or whatever on them.
This one said, “One of a Kind” on the front and had my name on the back. Nothing else. No note, no signature, just a ribbon with my name on it.
I told a few of my friends about it (pretty much exactly as I just typed it there, not with extra drama added or anything), and their reactions were, “wow, aren’t you scared? that’s so creepy!”
It didn’t even occur to me to be scared. I’m still not, now that it’s been suggested. At most, I’m amused.
So, dopers- are my friends being overly dramatic, or should I be sleeping with the lights on?
I would personally be fairly upset [I have had a stalker] mainly because I rarely leave the house [especially in the winter, I don’t’ want to fall and break anything, I’m gimpy enough as it is] so it would mean that someone snuck up to the house without me seeing them and did it, and the dog didn’t go apeshit with barking. Being in a rural area, we do not get many pedestrians…
Try to think of all the guys you know, however tenuously. Are any of them whimsical and flirtatious? It might be him, and that could be good. Are any of them seriously lacking in social cues? It might be him, and that could be bad. BTW, was it your first and last name, or just first?
Is it an apartment or a house? In a big apartment building, I could see some drunken kids horsing around, and just putting it on some random doorknob as a lark. If you have a house, someone went to the effort of walking up your yard to the door, which would ping my warning sensor.
Well it all depends, seems you have no clue who it might be from? I guess that makes it slightly creepier than if you at least had a suspect in mind, in which case it would be kinda neat.
It wouldn’t freak me out, but I’d be damn curious. I’d be trying to think of any good deed I’d done lately . . . and really not coming up with anything.
Are you living in a dorm? (Sorry, I can’t remember.) I’m thinking you’ve got it right. Just doesn’t seem very threatening to me. More like a card from a secret admirer.
Funny! Most things that are romantic in movies are creepy in real life. Couple of weeks ago I received a Xmas card in my inbox at work that didn’t have a name on it. I don’t know if it was some sort of super-Secret Santa that nobody else was in on but the giver, or a secret admirer, or a coworker happy with my work or what, but I had no idea who it was from. I threw it away.
Or, it might be someone in the neighborhood trying to do a “good deed”. They might have decided to give one of these ribbons to everyone in the neighborhood in an effort of good will.
Not necessarily the best idea, due to the more nefarious meanings these ribbons could have, but might not necessarily freak me out.
More would have had to happen to make me freak out.
Odds are, I’d be more in line with MeanOldLady and Cat Whisperer on my first reaction.
