Would you like a custom-coloured pet?

If you were able to order, say, a cat or dog in any colour or pattern of fur that you wanted, would you do that? Or would you consider it some form of undesirable behaviour for humans to make, for example, a bright pink cat? I’m talking about the pet being genetically manipulated in some way to have patterned or coloured fur, not simply a dye job.

Too much trouble. Besides, regular cats are plenty cute, and half the reason to wanting a pet is cuteness. A neon green dog or cat is less cute

My current cat has a very lovely natural tabby pattern however, I would be beyond delighted for him to be bright pink.

With so many perfectly good pets available from shelters, or even spontaneous adoption of a stray, I wouldn’t even specially-order a pet of a naturally-occurring color. If I were to go to the pound in search of a pet and found a dog with an agreeable personality and so on who happened to be green, I’d take him, but I don’t think the color would be relevant at all.

We’ve bred them into hundreds of weird shapes and sizes in the first place. It just took longer to do that. I’m with Chronos on the appeal to me personally, but if anyone else wanted one, I’d defend their right.

Come to think of it, a bright orange cat or dog might have advantages in terms of finding them if they ran off… just like those winter golf balls.

Or, how about camouflage-patterned hunting dogs!

I have turned my cat pink before, it is what you get when you tomato juice a skunked white cat =)

I prefer more natural colors in my pets, frankly … though she was very peeved for about a week until it faded.

I have a hard enough time choosing names for pets, let alone colours.

The breeding programs are bad enough without adding direct genetic manipulation to the mix, than you. I definitely would not want a genengineered pet.

I’d like a pink and white striped cat. I would call him Bagpuss.

There was a news story here in the UK a month or two back about a cat that someone had dyed pink and then abandoned - the presentation was aiming for pathos, but I’m pretty sure everyone watching it was thinking ‘I want a pink cat’.

I would specifically NOT want to genetically engineer a pet’s color. Not only do I find the existing colors beautiful to begin with, I also always fear collateral damage from messing with these things. For example, I understand that cats that are entirely white are prone to skin and eye trouble, and am convinced that calico cats tend to be mentally troubled. I fall in love with my pets and would always worry this practice had done them some kind of harm, noticeable to me or not.

College. White ferret. Blue Kool-Aid. 'Nuff said.

As long as it’s a bright orange camouflage-patterned dog, I’m ok with that.

Not sure I’d want a cat of a specific color, unless I could get carpet to match. Never needing to run the vaccume cleaner would please both me and cat.

A tartan plaid cat would be nice.

An iridescent blue or violet cat would be pretty. Maybe with tiger-stripes or leopard-spots of metallic gold or silver.

I would like to place an immediate order for a pair of mastiffs in Piebald Python please. Both color, and scalation please. Do away with the fuzz.

Oooh - that would be kind of cool.

I think it’s hard enough getting furniture and carpeting and even clothes that are colored just the right way to mask your pet’s hair…it would be harder if your pet were some bright color or something.

I like the random muted colors that dogs and cats come in are good enough to blend well with home decor.

Nah natural is better. This applies for humans too!

No way. Natural is boring. Lets see we humans have black, a shade of brown, another shade of brown, a third shade of brown, a fourth shade of brown, a fifth shade of brown…several shades of blonde and several shades of reddish/orange.

We need to add more colors to the genetic code.

I have two black cats. I would like one with green flames and one with blue flames like you see on cars please. Thank you. The check is in the mail.

BTW here is a reference photo for the geneticists.

and I want the other one the same way but in blue.
