Would you vote for Liz Cheney for president in 2024?

Thanks, Workingdude, and welcome to the Dope!

Sure, I prefer a shit sandwich with a high bread-to-shit ratio to one with a low bread-to-shit ratio, but I’d still not order the shit sandwich.

She was allowed to speak to a republican crowd at the Reagan Library. She got a standing ovation when she said they had to choose trump or the Constitution. It’s a start.

You mean, you don’t like her being anti-Trump? As noted, Cheney voted with Trump a lot, but from now on I think “anti-Trump” is definitely part of her package.

Are you sure that Cheney herself isn’t currently too “woke minded” for you? Last September, for example, she repudiated her earlier opposition to same-sex marriage rights.

Of course, it’s unclear how far that ideological shift will actually translate into legislative support:

Personally, although I wouldn’t vote for her, I have a suspicion that Liz Cheney will be elected the first female POTUS in 2028 (she won’t run in 2024). That is probably a very stupid notion, but I put it out there just to lend a little speculative excitement. Feel free to mock me if/when I turn out to be entirely wrong.

This. Assuming the Republic survives this dangerous time, we’ll be back in a world where she and I are on the opposite sides of practically every issue under the sun.

I’m glad as hell that she’s on the right side of things with respect to Trump’s coup attempt. And if I lived in Wyoming, I’d vote for her to continue as Representative, because no Dem stands a chance there.

But that’s as far as it goes. I want someone in the White House who is on the right side of the vast majority of issues - democracy, climate change, abortion, minority rights, things like that. She’s on the wrong side of practically all that. So no, of course I don’t want her to be President.

I have this magical thinking idea that if we had elected Bob Dole/Jack Kemp instead of a second term Bill Clinton the world would have been better off. No Bush(so no Dick Cheney, no missing the 911 plot, no Afganistan(should have been Pakistan) War . No Iraq, maybe.
But I could not change to Republican because I don’t like the underlying nastiness of their agenda.
As for Liz Cheney. Again ,can’t change my mind. But oh my goodness- spend 2minutes hearing this game of wits with an unarmed army of Republicans in Wyoming https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/vp2h3t/clips_from_wyomings_republican_primary_debate/

I’ve had the same thought about Ford instead of Carter for about the last forever. Whatever happened in Iran and central America, it would have been the GOP’s problem. A lot harder to see Reagan getting elected in 1980, and by 1984 his senility would have been showing through.

She’ll win the votes of every intelligent person in Wyoming, but unfortunately she needs a majority.

But Lordy, what a bunch of idiots were up on the stage with her. They were trying their best to regurgitate GQP talking points, and half the time they couldn’t even manage that.

Aa white supremacist who is tough on illegal immigration.

Well, then, Liz Cheney.

Bazinga!

No way. I’m grateful for what she’s doing regarding Trump but we don’t need another Republican in the Whitehouse, and certainly not one who could be influenced by Darth Cheney.

I’m voting for the Democratic candidate, but I would not scathingly look down on someone that supported someone like Liz Cheney or Mitt Romney. I’d disagree, but not lose all respect like I would for someone who supports Trump or Desantis.

Only if she’s running against Trump.

Sure, she has principles, but they’re not mine.

Okay, hypothetical here. Given the winner-takes all nature of most states’ Electoral College votes, what if you were a Democrat in a state that is almost certain to go to one Republican or another?

Let’s say the polling is Trump 35%, Cheney 34%, Democrat 31%. Would you be tempted to vote Cheney, to get her to above Trump’s numbers, so as to deny Trump the EC votes? How close would the polling have to be to make that math tempting?

The Democrat would have to be very (15%+?) far down in my state in that scenario for me to be willing to vote for a second Cheney Administration.

I wouldn’t because I would assume that when push comes to shove a lot of that 34% would cast their vote for the Democrat. I wouldn’t want to take any chances on a poll for a third party candidate.

The OP asks if I’d vote for Liz Cheney for president in 2024, then tells us he would vote for her to be the Republican party candidate without clearly stating his stance on the general election. But I’ll make it easy, there are circumstances where I’d vote for Liz Cheney in either the primaries or the general election. Most of those circumstances are where the competition is significantly less desirable. If the general election comes down to only Cheney and Trump as viable candidates I would vote for Cheney without hesitation. I doubt those circumstances will occur but sometimes you have to pick between two bad choices. Those times are called presidential elections.

Ayup.

Oh hell no! She represents a return to her father’s side of the Republican party. Endless war.
