Would you vote for Liz Cheney for president in 2024?

Not picking on you in particular, your view is quite popular in this thread, but do you mean in a race between Cheney and Trump for president you would either not vote or vote for Trump?

Not under normal conditions, but if I had grave enough doubts about the integrity or competence of the Democratic nominee, I absolutely would. I’d rather have a competent, sane Republican president than the Democratic equivalent of Trump, and I can imagine circumstances where some celebrity demagogue grifter becomes the flavor of the week at just the wrong time and ends up with the Democratic nomination. It would be silly to think Democratic voters are somehow immune to that sort of thing, even if the specifics of their policy positions would be different.

Liz Cheney still ended up voting on legislation that aligned nearly 100% with Trump. Conversely she is a routine No vote on Biden’s agenda when legislation is voted on in the House. She might get some kudos for being honest enough about the state of US democracy and its threat from a dangerous cult like worship within her own party but the fact we are giving kudos says more about the rest of the party than it does her. She shouldn’t be seen as presidential because she dares to admit the fact Donald Trump lost the 2020 election.

If I had to choose a not-Trump republican who I may envision as potentially viable to voters it would be Romney only because when he was governor of Massachusetts he worked with a democratic legislature rather than veto everything (only to run away from that to appease the hardliners in his party in 2012). And while he still largely opposes Biden’s agenda he has put forward his own counter proposals on issues like the child tax credit to try and reach a compromise. For the Dems his proposal falls short but at least it is something. There is an argument the Dems should just take him up on that offer with time running out until the mid terms and Manchin-Sinema blocking their party’s own bill. He also supported the infrastructure deal and I believe was one of the republicans Biden negotiated that deal with. That wouldn’t make me support him but there would be a purpose of his candidacy of how he might govern.

I won’t ever vote Republican again until the party takes responsibility for the events of January 6, 2021 and banishes party members who push their Stop the Steal nonsense and pretend nothing happened that day. It doesn’t matter who is on the Republican ticket, I will vote Democrat.

I think of Cheney as a “World Domination” supervillain, who temporarily teams up with the superheroes to help them stop the “World Destruction” supervillain (since she realizes it’s in her self-interest to do so). You are temporarily appreciative but you know as soon as you defeat the monster trying to blow up the planet, she’ll go back to building her robot army or mind control ray or whatever.

Cheney is currently trailing by 22 percentage points in Wyoming (to her Trump backed Qulty rival.)

She’s still a fucking Republikan, so no.

An demagogue Democratic grifter is a still a Democrat. That means the entire executive branch is controlled by a Democrat rather than a Republican. That means all the nominees to the federal courts are made by a Democrat rather than a Republican. That means all foreign policy is made by a Democrat rather than a Republican. How can any personal deficiencies in a candidate offset that?

That’s true in any normal world. We instead live in a world in which the odds of electing a sane, competent Republican are smaller than the odds of a spaceship safely landing on the sun. The argument doesn’t hold up to modern reality. There might possibly have been a time in which one could argue the position (not that I can point to any) but that time passed decades ago.

An interesting outlook:

And a word of caution, even this far out:

Maybe she should join the Freedom Party. That way nobody would vote for her and the Democrats would be completely safe.

Well, it was nice while it lasted:

The way she treated her sister is shameful. That said, let me see who is running. Right now, maybe.
