I saw it for the first time last night. It’s very imaginative in that it resembles a political campaign commercial for Senator Kelly, who, in the comics and movie, believes mutants are the enemies of “normal” humans and authored the Mutant Control Act.
I can’t say if the movie is any good (it isn’t out yet), but that commercial was very clever. The narrator says something like, “Mutants will be everywhere by July 14 (release date for the movie, I guess). But Senator Kelly is on your side, fighting to protect you and your family.” Here we see a worried-looking woman, who has perhaps learned her child is a mutant. Next we see protesters yelling and carrying signs that read “Humans, Yes! Mutants, No!”
Kelly is then shown with a bunch of kids and he says, “I don’t condone violence against mutants, but I sure do condone families.”
Finally, the commercial ends with a title that reads “Vote for Senator Kelly.” Then the narrator says, “Paid for by the Stop the X-Men Campaign.” There was not one special effects shot and Bruce Davidson, who plays Kelly, is the only star of the film who appears.
This commercial may be TOO subtle. I wonder how many people think there really is a Senator Kelly based on this ad.
No mention of the movie, looks very much like a real political site. Given the track record of movies made from Marvel comics, I fear the film itself, but the ad campaign is slick.
Given that track record, they have no where to go but up. And I’m cautiously optimistic. Good director, good story (from what I’ve read of it), good (IMO) approach. Actually, I’ll be happy if it just doesn’t suck. It doesn’t have to knock my socks off; I’ll be satisfied if I leave the theatre not loathing it.
And I really liked the ad. It speaks of actual competence. If they get their act together on the ad campaign, then it stands to reason they can get their act together in general, right? I know this reasoning doesn’t apply to actual Hollywood movies and whatnot, but with comic book movies, Marvel ones especially, the bar is set really low. Any signs of cleverness or innovation can only bode well.
That shot of Wolverine rolling across the top of the Statue Of Liberty, springing back up and going ‘SHING!’ with an animalistic growl on his face should be enough for anyone, I reckon There are some shots of the characters up at http://www.countingdown.com.
I’ve been following all the developments on the “X-Men” movie over at Coming Attractions (www.corona.bc.ca). I am cautiously optimistic. The cast is, in general, excellent (Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan!), and the stills of the actors in costume are good (I like the look of Wolverine’s claws and Cyclops visor). The story sounds okay; it remains to be seen if the cast and director can make it work.
It’s a photo of Rebecca Romijn-Stamos as Mystique.
I wish I’d been the make-up artist on that movie! :pant: :pant:
On the other hand, a sexual-harassment suit would REALLY mess up my life. :sigh:
I don’t know where Gambit is (or Beast, for that matter), but according to imdb.com, almost every other X-Man is in the flick! http://us.imdb.com/Title?0120903.
jab1, you’re right, they include more characters that I though! Just a few days ago, I was complaining “Why don’t they have iceman in the movie?” And lo and behold, he is!
Thank your lucky stars. The “debunked rumor” that I read: Keanu as Gambit. Gah! I would’ve had to beat my head in. A missing Gambit is preferable to that.
