XP and Norton 2001

I have Norton antiviris 2001 on my computer. I just updated from windows ME to XP and now Norton does not work. Is there an upgrade that I need to download from Norton or do I have to go and buy new software?

Ps: expect more computer questions in the near future from me. This update to XP caused more heartache then I think it was worth.

My understanding is that the 2001 version doesn’t work with XP, and you need at least NAV 2002 (I’m running 2002 with XP just fine, so the second part of my understanding is confirmed). I’m sure Symantec will be happy to sell you an upgrade, but only to the 2004 version, and I don’t know how much that costs. Perhaps you can see if someone’s selling 2002 on eBay.

If you don’t want to spend any money, however, supposedly all you need is to download the symevent patch, per the instructions here. I have no idea if this really works or not, though – it’s just a result Google returned when I searched for “norton 2001 xp”. If it kills your computer, I’m not responsible.

Hey, make sure you run the full windows update before you start upgrading any pre-installed software, just as a safety. When I upgraded a long time ago, I had many a problem with compatibility. After you do this, just simply uninstall NAV, restart, and reinstall it. This should solve your problems. Just an FYI, NAV is OS specific… ie no NAV should just automatically work after an upgrade (unless they somehow changed that for 2004/5)

sorry my sentances are disjointed.
make sure you post and let me know if there are any other problems
