Yahoo Photos bites the dust

This really sucks.

Yeah, I know that there are “better” photo hosting sites out there, The thing is that Yahoo Photos suits my needs perfectly. Even with some kind of “easy migration”, I’ll have to spread my photos out over multiple sites or pay for a “pro” subscription somewhere. I’m cynical enough to think they had this in mind when they “upgraded” last year. Sucker a bunch of people to upload unlimited images, then discontinue the service, and direct them to sites that will cost them $25/year to store the collections they’ve amassed.

Damn. We’ve been using Yahoo Photos a lot during the past year to share all the sports photos we’ve been taking of the kids and their team mates, and I know other parents have been ordering prints.

I’m pretty sure I won’t be paying $25/year just for the pleasure of photo sharing, though.

Move from IMHO to MPSIMS.

There’s always Google’s Picasaweb. Doesn’t have as intuitive a name as Yahoo Photos, but it gives you a gig of space for free and people can still pay for prints.

Oh, and it integrates with the fantastic (and free!) Picasa photo management program.

Never used Yahoo Photos (i’m not a big fan of Yahoo in general), but i’m not sure why some folks see $25 a year as unreasonable for having a decent photo-sharing account.

My PBase account costs me $23 a year for 500Mb of storage. Even at a (relatively large) picture size of 250kb per image, that’s about 2,000 pictures. Despite the fact that i’m not exactly rolling in money, $23 a year doesn’t exactly break the bank, and it’s a good, reliable service. Far better than Flickr, IMHO.

You can always use yahoo’s own flickr, they have free accounts. I like flickr more than any other photo-sharing website. YMMV. (as a plus there´s a SDMB group there).

I find flickr to be restrictive given the monthly limits on accounts.

Picasaweb is far better and the downloadable editing software is fabulous for tweaking almost-perfect pictures into better shape.

Definitely try Picasa and Picasaweb. Through Picasa, I was able to turn some very dark and dim pictures of my family into something you could see. It’s a great photo editing program, and the website is pretty much what you’re looking for.
