Yahoo (via Frontier) mail outgoing SMTP Server - Help!

I gave my elderlyish neighbor my old iPad2 five years ago. He hasn’t been able to receive e-mails on it for ages, I found out. Problem one is that his wife set everything up and she’s since passed away. I brought it home with me to see if I could get things going again. The first thing I did was apply updates. It’s now on ios 9.3.5 and not offering anything beyond that. That cured the problem with receiving e-mail. However, it can’t send e-mail.

When I send an e-mail from his iPad, it looks like it sends but the mail remains in the outbox with a ? icon by it. When I click on that, it says, "Cannot send mail. Check the settings for the outgoing servers in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Which I’ve done but I can’t get it to work.

We have the same ISP so I’m comparing to the settings on my own iPad. Under his settings it shows outgoing mail services as SMTP - no server. So I click on that and it shows the primary server as Yahoo! SMTP server > Off. So I click on that and turn it on but the “Done” option is grayed out. All I can do is Cancel. We have the Host name on both is Yahoo! SMTP Server. On mine (iPad air on ios 11.2.2) the outgoing server shows Yahoo! SMTP Server with no user name or password (both say optional) SSL is on and not changeable. Authentication is OAuth 2.0 Token, which also can’t be changed. Server port is 465. I have what he thinks is the Yahoo mail password…similar to 54Ford but I’m not sure if it should be 54ford or 54Ford, or if it’s even right. It verifies the account either way though.

Is this just a password issue with Yahoo mail? I know from experience that Yahoo will NOT give you your own e-mail password if you call them.

I guess the simple solution would be to set up a gmail account (or similar) for him? I don’t have a gmail account. I’d rather leave him on what he’s familiar with but if that’s the best/easiest way to deal with this, he’ll have to live with it.

Is it possible to “wipe” the tablet clean & restore all factory default settings? Would he lose much (saved photos etc.) if you went with the nuke-from-orbit approach?

It’s a heavy handed approach, granted.

I thought about that but since I don’t know his passwords and I don’t think he does either, I didn’t go that route. I set up a gmail account for him and he’ll just have to deal with the two accounts. Thanks though.

Can you point it at your own ISP’s SMTP server?
There is no need to use Yahoo’s. You just need access to one somewhere.

Often, when you are on your own ISP’s network they will allow access to the unsecured SMTP port, and only require you use the secure port when coming in from another network. his may save you issues with passwords, although the ISP may be a bit more flexible in resetting things for you it needed.
