Is it wrong that while reading this thread, I’ve been humming “I Hold Your Hand In Mine” by Tom Lehrer?
I’m a bit perplexed how anyone could be convicted of assaulting someone absent a body. If I’m reading the article correctly, they were attempting to dig up the coffin with the intent of having sex with the corpse, but never actually made it to the body…
The original charge was “attempted assault”. IANAL, but I imagine criminal intent along with taking definite actions toward achieving the criminal end would be sufficient for an “attempt” charge. Om ths case, the actions taken were criminal ini and of themselves – digging up the coffine, maybe tresspassing, or whatever else they remain charged with-- buy I don’t think that is necessarily a requirement.
Does Ginger know about this?

My own, not anyone else’s, in case you were wondering.
*This is the tale of Mary Cox,
Who gave thousands of men the dreaded pox.
Soldiers, sailors, men of honour,
Faught like flies to get upon her.
Now she’s dead, but not forgotten,
They dig her up and suff her often.*
Really, I feel we’re beating a dead horse at this point.
You guys stop that! I said “beating”!
Okay, that made me laugh out loud. Despite the fact that this whole thing gives me all kinds of “the icks.”
Honey, I hear you. But the thing is. I live in a small town too. In the middle of a farming county. And we have little crime, relatively speaking. But some years ago, some guy killed his wife and cut her head off. He dumped her body in a ditch, and kept the head in a plastic bag in his trunk. That was pretty blasted unsettling for everyone here.
Bad, crazy people are not confined to large cities. They live everywhere. It doesn’t mean that these nutcases live in your hometown because YOUR HOMETOWN is at fault. It just means that these people happened to live in your hometown. No one’s fault, except the nutcase’s. And I think we can agree that they ARE nutcases? The only people to blame is THEM.
A few years ago I was watching a PBS program about Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and they interviewed this guy. He talked about how crazy he knew he was, and that he had tried to minimize the damage he might do to anyone else by moving to a remote island. It was a very good program. So then they asked him where his island WAS. And he said “Lummi Island, in NorthWest Washington State.” And, hon…Lummi Island is right across the channel from where MY BROTHER LIVES! It is not “remote”, it is not evenly REMOTELY “remote.”
I’m SO not equating this poor man with PTSS with these guys who were trying to dig up a grave in order to have sex with a corpse…I think that is a whole 'nother kind of sickness.
I am not equating him with these sickos, but I am just trying to show that people with problems live next door to EVERYONE. Yes, the parents are in pain and we should give them some grace. Still, they are unlikely to see this thread. And I think you can appreciate the black humor in the situation? Because really, they ARE very sick, and I think we all know it. Making fun of it isn’t negating that, it is just people trying to salvage some kind of “sense” out of a really icky thing that happened…by using black humor. It is very hard for those of us who could never understand how these people could DO something like that to UNDERSTAND HOW THESE MEN COULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
Black humor is one way to deal with that. It isn’t a perfect way, but sometimes it is the only way people can do it.
